| CPU overheating despite 6 fans
I have an AthlonXP1600 running at a CPU temperature of 67C (on average) with a cooling fan in the front of the case, a fan at the back of the case, I pulled the cover off of an expansion slot and inserted a 3 fan hard drive cooler. I have an Athlon supported CPU fan (on correctly, i checked), and a system blower next to the Graphics Card. I also have a 350Watt power supply with dual exhaust fans.
When I took the system blower out for noise purposes, the CPU temp shot up to 77c and the system overheated and crashed.
The fan I took out was blowing on the graphics card...thats why im so surprised by the overheating. I have even gone as far as to drill holes in the front of the case for MORE ventilation. lol
Any thoughts on a way to better way to cool this machine? I have bundled all the cables internally to allow better airflow, and even turned the fan at the back of the case to blow in to hit the CPU directly.
Other then getting one of the new Aluminum cases with 3 fans and venting on the side panels, im at a loss. Any help would be appreciated. |

I think you have a problem with your heatsink on the cpu. It must not be making proper contact with the core. I would remove it and remount it using thermal paste, not tape or any other type of pad. You must use some paste, it could be the stuff radio shack sells, or best Artic Silver.
Also, the hs should not be resting on the raised side of the socket. Also, your hsf could be not big enough for the job.

ditto, this would be my guess. One way to check is to touch, very carefully, the fins of the HSF.at 67c it should be uncomfortable to touch for long.If you don't feel the fins are hot, remove the HSF and remount it. |

Indeed the HS would be the first place I would look, but also make sure with all of those fans that you have good air flow and that the fans are cooperating with each other not competing against each other. You should have air coming in the front of the case and flowing through and over the CPU and out the back, at least thats how I have mine and it is no where near your temp rates. |

| Six fans? That ought to be enough to cool a blown V-8. Must be the die/heatsink contact. |

i'd recommend getting a Thermaltake Volcano 7+, it's a bit pricey, but it will definitely cool your cpu better. if that's too much, go for the Thermaltake Dragon Orb 3+, it also works quite well and can be had for $20 at newegg.com. i really think it's your hsf, i'd reattache it with some AS3, and if that doesn't work, i'd just go out and buy another hsf. |

Remount the heat sink. You can have this problem with too much or too little paste.
