What's a safe temperature?
My new system (Athlon XP2000) was running @ 60º C (after a couple of hours usage).
I installed a fan I took out from an old power supply and is blowing air directly into the motherboard, rigth next to the CPU, now the temperature after a few hours (3,4) is :
Board=40ºC
CPU=55ºC
Can it get better than that or that's good enough?
Besides that the case has the regular fan inside the PS and another one in front of the case. Oh! and the AGP card has its own fan too.

that's pretty good, it certainly won't cause any damage. it sounds like you need to get more circulation in your case, cause it's currently 105F in your case, and i doubt it's that hot in your room. i'd recommend trying to hide your cables as much as possible and also add some more case fans.

My XP runs about 42°C at idle and 48-50°C under full load.

How do you check the temperature from within win98 anyway?
I was restarting the 'puter and going into BIOS to check the temperature....
What software?

My BIOS has settings to auto-shutoff the 'puter if temperatures go over 60, 65 or 70ºC (I set it to 65º)....I was playing Wolfenstein RTC a few minutes ago & the machine shut down...I waited 1 minute and powered it ON and the temp. was 55º
Does that make sense? did it cool down 10º in the minute it was off?
Anyway I have an extra fan laying on my desk, but I don't know where to put it, any ideas?

Most likely, yes.

August 31st, 2002, 10:52 PM #9My XP2000+ (not OC'd) runs close to OuT's temps...what HS/Fan are you using Mr. NoOne? Also, did you slap on some AS3 before installing whatever HS/Fan you are using? Also, do you have any case fans installed?Originally posted by OuTpaTienT

I agree with OuT, your cpu temps can drop rather quickly when the system powers off.

EDIT: Check THIS cpu cooling link out, it may provide useful info...the case drawing w/fans is accurate!
THIS is another good one!
Also, try Motherboard Monitor for realtime temperature monitoring.Last edited by Martoch; August 31st, 2002 at 11:00 PM.

Well since I bougth a motherboard kit (board+CPU+memory+HS) everything came installed from the store (Micropro.com), the HS said "coolmaster" (is that the brand?) and I really hope they did a good job puting the 'grease'.
Have anybody thought of cooling the motherboard from behind? Does it make sense? Maybe make a few holes on the case for that?

September 3rd, 2002, 10:37 PM #11Why don't you take a look? IMO, it's worth cleaning off their "grease" and putting some AS3 on your chip. Also, you never answered my question...how many, if any, case fans do you have?Originally posted by Mr. NoOne

BTW, it's CoolerMaster

Well initially my case had one fan inside the PS and one behind the front "face plate"...
One "CoolerMaster" on the CPU and the video has it's own HS+fan
I screwed-in a PS fan into a expansion slot (well not the slot, but where that little metal cover is in the back of the case (the ones you remove when you install a board)) and it's blowing air directly into the motherboard, next to the CPU
Yesterday I added another PS fan blowing air across the motherboard & perhaps also some air is going to the back of the motherboard too.
And finally a small 486 fan is blowing a little air into the hard drives.
Also I punched a few additional holes in the front of the case, just where that fan is sucking air in.
I haven't tested with a full load yet but I saw some improvements last nigth...
I'll keep you posted....

I use it religiously.
