When will you be able to buy a AMD 2600 I have not seen any yet? Also will I be able to use current AMD motherboards with the AMD Hammer? I'm still not sure which to get P4 2.53 or AMD 2600
Thx |

The Hammer won't some out until the beginning of next year. As for mobo support, I am not sure. |

The 2600 is not a Hammer, and last I read, it should become available sometime in October. |

Thanks Quote: Originally posted by Ashentep The 2600 is not a Hammer, and last I read, it should become available sometime in October. | Yes, I'm saying If I buy a 2600 now will I be able to upgrade to the hammer with the same MB.
If I have to buy a new motherboard for AMD to upgrade then it may make more sense to go with the P4 I think it will actually be cheaper than the 2600. Even though I will have to upgrade the Intel MB if I want to upgrade in the future

Oh okay...I see now.
This taken from part of a FAQ at AMDzone.com:
Q: What socket will Clawhammer and Sledgehammer use?
A: Clawhammer will use a socket with 754 pins while Sledgehammer will need a socket with 940 pins. AMD has not officially named these socket types as they have with the Athlon's Socket A which uses 462 pins.
Full article is here: http://www.amdzone.com/articleview.cfm?ArticleID=1195
Thats a lot of pins! |

maface,
I am in the same boat. Try to decide between an Intel and AMD. I read an interesting article that Intel is starting to be competitive with AMD in regards to their pricing structure. They expect the P4 2.4ghz to be very close to the XP2400.
If thats the case, I would imagine more people are going to opt for Intel. An xp2400 has a clock speed of 2.0 and Intel 2.4. (in addition to the 533mhz bus).
The test they did between the two, they OC the XP2400 and it was surpassing the 2.4 in some benchmarks. However what people fail to realize is that you have to push the XP to the point where the Intel normally is at. What happens when you OC the Intel? Bottom line for AMD is that if Intel is competitive close, it's almost a no brainer. |

wrz0170,
I agree, one of the major considerations when I was leaning towards AMD was price but if their is not much difference I will probably buy Intel |

Yes - it sure seems like AMD has been losing much of its edge in the past couple months. Processor price/performance ratios are getting closer, Intel based MB's are getting cheaper, and there are now some decent P4/DDR chipsets available.
I sure hope AMD gets things moving on its new releases, or they could be in trouble. |

maface,
I did a pricing of amd XP2200 and the Intel 2.4. I took into consideration the motherboard of choice between both, 256megs of PC3000 and the processor. The difference was around $40. So I looked at it, thats basically $10 per 100mHz difference. I am also taking into consideration that nice 533mHz bus edge that Intel has.
So I am heavily leaning towards Intel at this point. But I am waiting on a couple of things. See what the XP2600 comes in at and to see more of a line of the 648 chipsets by Intel. That chipset supposedly "officially" takes advantage of the DDR333 memory. |
