Question about overclocking a P4??

hi, this is going to be my first time overclocking and i have a couple of questions. fir st of all, how do i do it without burning out the cpu? second, i don't want to overclock that much as this is a brand new system and also what is the safe speed for running it with the stock H/S and fan?
system specs:

P4 1.7
ASUS P4-TE
256 MB RDRAM PC-800
ATI radeon 7000 64MB
SB live 5.1
maxtor 40 gig HDD

If you look at the cpu database at www.overclockers.com there are about 22 entries for a 1.7 with the average overclocked speed being 2075 and the highest being 2346 and he is using the retail Intel cooler---"burning out" a cpu is a rare one, getting too agressive with your settings usually results in a non-boot situation or a lockup shortly thereafter---monitor your temps and you shouldnt have any heat problems...
