    Question Overclocking really necessary?

Hey everyone i was wondering if all this overclocking is really necessary, for example ppl with a 1800+ over clock to get maybe 100-200MHz more but isned the 1800 Fast enough as it is and is 200 MHZ really gonna make that much of a difference?

Someone help me on that one

yes and no. maybe not now so much of a difference, but think back to when pentiums first came out. would you want a 100mhz or a 250mhz? very big difference. also its just sumthin to do when you are bored.

I OC because i can and because i like to squeeze my system's performance to the last drop.

    Is it a necessity? Nope!
    Is it fun? heck yea

No, overclocking is not necessary. With today's high MHz CPU's, the extra 200MHz really doesn't make that much of a difference. But it is fun trying to get the most out of the CPU by overclocking.

you don't have to overclock the processor to gain system speed. i concentrate on overclocking the memory bandwidth and processor. i try to get the most out of the memory, processor, and agp card...

    www.google.com is your freind...

run a search for the mobo you have and the processor you're using..

    ei. search: 8k3a+, 1800+, overclocking, how-to guide

    good luck...

When you OC the FSB of your CPU, you OC your system in general (memory, AGP, PCI ....).

Most MoBos have BIOSes that allows you to OC memory even more than the FSB, like the CL timing and other stuff that only high quality memory can survive them.

Check this page to know what things will do before changing the settings (memory OCing regarded)

Ah the heck with it im just gonna leave it before i screw something up. And even if the system isned clocked with a 1800 or 1900 XP a G4 and 512 Of DDR RAM i think ill be fine w/out clocking.

atta boy... at least you know that there's still headroom for you to do so just in case....

ps. remember the stepping codes.... it will be important laters on.

Not on the thread, in the docs they pointed you toward.

Basicaly just giving you some common sense advice, like "look both ways before crossing the road".

And I'm with nomadman, in that knowing that your system has room to overclock is a great thing. For example, most systems suffer from a 'bottleneck', one setting that is holding back all the others. By selectively OC'ing a system you can find the bottle neck and know ahead of time what the next upgrade should be.

Before you try OC'ing get some hardware monitoring program running, so that you can be certain of heat buildup, in the processor especially.

And have fun. To me that is the best part about this. Its like a mystery movie and you get to be the detective!

edit: The typo king strikes again!
