    Temperatures

I know this topic has probably been beaten to death, but I can't seem to find a good answer. I built my computer recently and am not sure about the temps. It is a Tyan Tiger MP mobo with Dual AMD Athlon MP 1600+. I get temps of around 46-48 C idle on CPU1 48-50 C full load; the second CPU usually runs a degree or two higher than CPU1 on both idle and full load. The overall case temp runs somewhere in the mid 70's.

It's somewhat frustrating too, using the BIOS temp monitoring, the system monitoring from Tyan, and Motherboard Monitor program all give me slightly differnet results, so I am never sure what might be accurate or not.

    Thanks.

First of all, the temp's that come off the mobo are notorious for being inaccurate. They can be off by quite a bit from the real temp. Second, if you're running stock cooling, those temp's don't sound that bad. Third, when you say that your case temp. is around 70 degrees, I sure hope you mean Farenheit! If that's 70C, that would be like 158F!! But 70F is pretty good for a case temp. I wish mine was that low! I usually run a case temp of around 30-32C (86-90F). and my CPU, which is watercooled, runs about 40C idle/ 45C full load (104/113F). I run an AMD 1800+ overclocked. If you are concerned about your temps, try a Digital Doc or something similar, and put extra sensors on your CPU's. That's what I did.

I'm running dual 1800+ on a Tyan S2466N-4M and I have same temps as you do for idle and max load. However, The readings I get in the BIOS seem to match the readings in the Tyan SysMon. I've also compared readings I get from Tyan SysMon and MBM5 and they both seem to match...

The BIOS temps I am trying to do from memory..... I am still tweaking MoBo monitor, I might not have something set right. I guess that the temps I get are good then. Once I get some of this machine paid off, I am seriously toying with the idea of going water cooled.

I do have problems sometimes though with lockups, which seem to be due to slight over-heating...

Well, I've tried running my system up to as high as 72C for both processors under full load with all case fans shut off just to see how stable it would run and it ran without any lockups. Another reason for system lockup other than driver issues, could be from video card overheating. I really doubt the lockups you are getting are caused by heat from the processors. And besides, unless your going to do some excessive overclocking, which you can't on the Tiger MP mainboard, I think it would be a waste of cash to invest in a watercooling system.

TRhat could be a possibility. I have a PNY GeForce 4 Ti 4200. It came with "integrated GPU heatsink/cooling fan and custom memory heatsinks" (quote from PNY website). I do have a slot cooling fan installed next to the video card. Is there a way to test to see if the video card is causing the problem?

I am thinking about water cooling mostly due to teh amount of $$ I have invested in this system (over 3K). Expensive, yes. This being my first "real" computer, and not a hand me down, and being involved in testing/gaming, I feel it is worth it.

Very nice! I should add up the cost of mine some day. I'm almost afraid to though! Four 40GB HDD's, is that a RAID setup? What level? Which Promise card you got? I'm using a Highpoint 404, 4 channel ATA 133. I've got 4 Maxtor ATA 133 40GB HDD's (each on it's own channel) in RAID 0. I've also got a WD 100GB Special edition for back-ups and stuff. 260 GB total! You can see my PC on my site. Have any case mods?

Actually they are all independant of each other. I have three hooked up to the Trios drive, so I can have idependant OS on each drive (XP Pro, getting around to putting Linux on one, and one for test) I have the Promise ATA 100 running the 4th drive and the zip drive. No case mods, haven't really ever gotten into that--don't have the steady hand to do it.

In MBM 5.2 it shows that my Athlon MP1600 is running at 25 C 77F CPU temp and 20 C 68 F Case temp. How are other people doing for Athlon 1600's? I have 4 case fans and a 50cfm cpu fan for my Thermalright AX-7. I was getting better temps with a 68cfm delta but downgraded for peace of mind.

Well, unless you are running a water cooler, I would say that you may want to double check which sensor/diode you are retrieving your CPU temp from in MBM. That is a bit low....
