| after crushing 2 cores....
Well as the heading states. I recently crushed 2 amd cores. Im not a novice, having removed and replaced many hsf's. But a few days ago i decided to upgrade my hsf from a volcano 7 to the 7+ (gotta love full copper hsf) to hopefully get my agnga 1800+ up to 1800mhz but was thwarted buy the fact i crushed the chip, tried to put my spare dunro 1000 in the mb and kablamo crushed again, feeluing very hurt and crushed (pardon the pun) I went to the local reseller and got a 1800 t-bred A core AIUGA 0241 chip and baby this thing rocks, im burining it in and im already at 1900 mhz (152*12.5). Looking at overclockers.com database and Im aiming for 2ghz.
all in all a very expensive exercise |

Ouch !
I wonder if AMD is going to put heat spreaders/die protectors on their CPUs like Intel did with the P4 (and AMD used to do with the K6). |

From a consumer POV they will respect them even more with them understanding how easy it is to crush them and giving them some protection thus saving consumers money.
Expensive lesson indeed. |

I'm a newbie, and ultimatly lost. How do you "crush" a chip. And what are heat spreaders and die protectors?

| Oooh, that sucks! That would be a good move on AMD's part. For now, I'll just stick with using a shim and hope for the best! |

And what are heat spreaders and die protectors? | There is like another chip on top of the chip. the core chip is in the center of the cpu on topside, so when you place a hs/fan ontop of this and if its not put on correctly you can crush the core of the chip easily thus damaging the core of the cpu whhich makes it useless keychain.
a heatspreader is like a heatsink only it spreads out the heat from the cpu.
die protectors not sure, but common sense tells me that it is a protecoter to prevent from accidently crushing the core. |

NP, a shim is a thin piece of nonconductive metal which goes on your CPU. It has holes cut out for the core and the bridges. It's the same thickness as the core. This way the pressure of the heatsink is applied evenly across the core and it won't get crushed. Here is what it looks like... http://www.highspeedpc.com/Merchant2...tegory_Code=CS |

Considering I'm trying to build a computer in a week, maybe I should order one of these. I would hate to crush the new AMD Athlon 2200+ I just bought. |
