What's a safe temp for a katmai? - Tech Support Forums

I have a P3-Katmai 500, heat alarm set at 70.
Keeps going off.
Am I right in thinking that these chips have thermal protection so they shut down before they actually die?
This happens whatever clock I run it at, and I can't lower the voltage in BIOS.
This is annoying as I can't work with that sound going on, so I have disabled the siren (cut the pins).
I know it sounds a silly question, but was it a bad idea.

Well, it seems OK, I have had it running dnetc, (OGR and RC5-72) since I posted that, and it is overclocked to 625Mhz.
I did notice when I ripped it apart to take the siren out that the fan on the cpu was covered i dust, so I took it off and taped a new one on (it has those weird clips)
