Not sure if this is the right thread, but there is already a question about memory brands here, so heregoes:
I am thinking of buying 512mb of PC133 ram.
If I were to buy from crucial, it would cost £51, but if I go with generic brand from ebuyer, it only comes out at £33.
The question is: is generic brand still major brand so will it still work with athlon mobos?
The one in questioin is the ECS K7S5A.
[edit]
Oh, and will ECC still work in normal boards (not dual athlon)?

i had some generic pc2100 ram on a k7s5a, and it turned that baby into a flying piece of flaming crap. I would suggest some real stuff, i sold it on here to someone, i wonder who that was... i could check, but i don't feel like it. anyways, yeah, i would say that 20 pounds would be well placed money.. |

This is the one I was thinking of. http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=22918
I won't really be able to overclock the RAM as it is a K7S5A and has pretty much no overclocking potential, I just need it to work better than my current 256mb of PC100 as I am also planning on upgrading to an XP chip this year.

i dont think going from 128 to 256 or to 512 make any difference at all. im only surfing the internet and using p2p and im down to 42 percent and occasionally windows just for some reason suck it down to 12 percent and then it cant run any program at all. hmm you obvioyusly have to reboot no matter what.
i bought 512 because it seem cheapest vs 128 or 256, was only 10 buck more then 256meg so i say what the hell but it turn out that's more then windoze can manage. seeing as how inefficent windoze manages memory i see no point in putting 2 stick of 128 or 256 or 3 stick of 64meg etc... |

What OS are you using? If it is W98, that is a bug and you can resolve that by changing the vcache. |

I run only name brand DDR, but for SDram, I run 2 sticks of 256Mb PC133 in my wifes K7S5A and haven't had any problems, even running it at max memory timing, but with generic you never know, I could have been lucky. It's a gamble, but make sure if you are gonna buy generic you can exchange/return it if there is a problem. |

i have bought memory from e-buyer before and it has worked well, but these are for clients machines not mine as i always run crucial i have had too many headaches in the past with generic memory.
dont forget shipping with e-buyer is around £5 and its free with crucial, and the crucial stuff has a better warranty. |

I had a stick of 512 ddr 2100 generic and it had memory errors playing war3 or GTA 3 frequently. The problem was fixed when i lowered the FSB to 100mhz, but that was annoying to have to step down the processor to avoid errors, so i bought a stick of 512 pc 2700 crucial and not a single problem yet |
