| Anyone running the Thermalright SK-6? I have a question....
What fan do you use with your Thermalright SK-6 heat sink? When I bought the HS it came with a GlobalWin fan. It keeps the processor cool around 46 degrees C but the dang thing sounds like a jet engine. If I stop that fan for a second or two my system quiets down a ton. I am looking to replace this fan but I am not sure which one I should get. How much CFM's should I be looking at pushing? Also I would need a 60mm fan correct? TIA.

You *should* be able to install a 80-60 adapter to use a bigger fan, Personally I use the volcano6CU (SK6 is supposed to be better) with a 4550RPM thermaltake, nice and quiet and keeps my temps at 45c full load, but my case temp is 22c.
If your fan screws on to the HS (pretty sure it does) then you can an adapter, much more quiet and a lot more CFM. I tend to stick with thermaltake fans. |

hey Wiz.. I don't know how you are going to install a 60 to 80 mm adapter for it.. as that heatsink uses metal clamps to hold on the 60mm.. I have 2 of them that use to be on my old dual.. and if u think 1 sounds loud.. u should hear 2.. with delta screamers on it.. =)
unless there is an adapter that was made for the heatsink.. then it's stuck with 60mm fans

*Should* use some custom screws (real big ones) That's what I wasn't sure of, I have a Thermalright WBK-38 here, (on my wifes PC) keeps her temp down to under 50 on a 1Ghz Athlon, but I installed a 4550rpm fan on that too. |

Hmm...I don't think I could install an adapter. The fan is held onto the heatsink by two little clips that attach to the base of the heatsink. I have the clearance for it. Would I still need to use those clips to hold the adapter on and then just screw the fan to the adapter? What is the advantage of using a 60mm fan vs an 80mm fan? My processor is a XP 1900+. What kind of RPM's and CFM should I look for? |

I use the Thermalright SK-6 on my XP1900+. Very nice. That HS is my second choice after the Taisol model with the copper insert. I have always used a Sunon fan ... presently 4849 rpm and very quiet.
My CPU temp is 40C ( Hot for my system!) as there are 2 120mm fans on the side of my case intaking air from the forced hot air furnace register 3 feet away!
My memory is I had to find some longer screws ... but I do not know how long. It's been a couple of months since I've even seen my motherboard!

My case is a Lian-Li PC60 case with 2 Sunon KD1208PTB2 fans in the front controlled by a rehostat, 1 Adda AD0812MB-A70GL in the rear. The Sunon fans I have are rated for 39 CFM at 32 dBA and they rotate at 2900 RPM. The Adda fan is rated for 31.4 CFM at 28.3 dBA and they rotate at 2440 RPM. Both fans are hardly audible. Just curious but how can such a high rotating fan be that quiet? Thanks for the info so far.

You can use an 80mm fan with the SK6 using the higher/longer fan clips.
The fan won't fit as does the 60mm fans, but rather turned.
I wish I had a picture to show you, but I don't have the heatsink handy to take a pic.
Imagine how the 60mm fan looks and fits, turn it 45 degrees and that's how the 80mm would fit. The clips would hold onto the exterior of the fan channel.
The catch? it has to be a 'normal' height 80mm fan as higher height 80mm fans won't fit because of the clip length. |
