can you ran an a full version winxp pro on a 2000 and keep all the inf. plus settings from your old OS. This pc has lots of business inf. which I would hate to loose.

Yes.
Just boot from the CD, and select upgrade existing OS.
Worked great for my upgrade from 98 to XP. Even kept all my color schemes and desktop settings.
A fresh install is of course preferred, but I know where you're coming from...all those apps to re-install (and customize) can be a real pain.
