building first pc ground up question.

Hey all,

first time assembling a PC completley from scratch- I got a free Mb from work a SY-5ehm V 1.3 But it needs a processor and cooling. Now I know i need a AMD k-6 and max of 500 and socket 7, but that is as much as I know. For instance can I use this processor? and what about cooling?
Anything else I am ignorant of when assembling?

thanks

mike

apparently that mb can support up to a k6-2 550, so yes, you could use that processor. For cooling, the fan that comes with your processor should be sufficient. Don't forget you need at least a 250+ watt power supply as well.

I think I'd definately go with 300w minimum with todays standards. Chips are using alot more power, not to mention the average computer has a cd-rw, dvd-rom, and more demanding graphics cards nowadays.

CAn't see that machine eating up too much power. I am running one here with a K6/2 500@550, 384mb ram, cdrw, 3 hd but admittedly not a very beefy graphics card, and on the PSU it says 220w so don't believe everything you hear.
Just any socket 7/socket A cooling fan will do. You do not need major brand memory, even the cheap stuff will work in this board and that should be about it. Just remember the obo doesn't support increased AGP speeds as well, so there is no point buying a 4x card over a 1x one.
