I've never really bothered with overclocking my processor, but looking for advice from people who do. Im running an XP 2000+ with Volcano 9 and a Soyo Dragon Ultra mobo, would it be worth the performance gain to overclock, and if so how much should i set the FSB to (1 mhz stepping)
You really can't get a whole lot more out of the 2000-2200's. AMD was pretty much at the end of the line on their XP's until they added another metal layer, allowing the chips a faster clock speed. You could set the FSB to about 138 and get a small preformance gain safely if you want. Make sure an monitor your temp.
I'm about to buy an XP2000+ for $78 or so. I am going to run an Epox EP-8RDA mobo and 512MB 266MHz PC2100 DDR. Are you saying that I sould save a little on the CPU by buying a lower one and overclocking it?
I will tell you that my 1800 clocks to xp 2200 speeds pretty easily. If it were me, I would buy a slightly slower xp and spend the extra money on a good heatsink/fan.
The HSF is the one area that has been taking the longest for me to decide - no dominant obvious choice has jumped out at me. I am definitely going with a performance one though.

I don't overclock normally but I just put a XP2000 in mine and it's running at 2200 (1.81GHz). I'm using the Soyo Dragon Ultra Platinum. I have a Volcano 7+ but it's sitting on my desk awaiting to be lapped from crushing my 1800 . Instead I'm using a $20 CoolMaster HCC-002. That damn hs/f keeps it just as cool. My temp ran at 36ºC during 5 hours of encoding this morning (board was at 28ºC).
I think I kicked the bus up to 148MHz to get the 2200. I'll take that. I like the temps too, stable as ever too.
