| Duron identified as Athlon?
Months ago I bought two Duron1200s
One went into the Wife's new PC, the other was kept as a spare.
This week, while upgrading our Son's PC, I replaced his Duron750 with the spare 1200.
Windows & SiSoft Sandra ID the CPU as an Athlon1200.
The Wife's is properly identified as a Duron1200
I paid no particular attention to the writing on the CPU chip. The curiosity was killing me, so I removed the HS/fan, only to find that the CPU is a Duron.
Has anyone else encountered the phenomenon of a Duron masquerading as an Athlon? |

Hmm... 1st thing that comes to mind is... "What the???"
Are they using the same motherboard? Perhaps your sons PC has a wierd motherboard & it isn't identifying the CPU correctly....
Have you tried looking in other apps? e.g. cpu-z or wcupid?
What does windows show? e.g. right click on my computer & choose properties...
What does direct X show? E.g. start/run type in dxdiag

They're not really different, the Duron is an Athlon with less and slower cache.
Maybe the programmers didn't bother to differentiate them, or the board identifies it as such. |

J man,
Windows properties shows it as an Athlon1200.
The Mobos are both recent Biostars, but of different models
If it were not for the pain involved, I would swap the CPUs to find out what is going on |

As Jay suggested, check it out with cpu-z. You need to access the core's cpuid function to correctly determine its type. If is still says Athlon, check the cache sizes. Only a true Athlon features 256KB L2.

CPU-Z - http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
That was also what i meant to say, check the cache size....
And no, the cache isn't "slower", cache on all modern althons & durons run at full processor speed, e.g. For 1Ghz Athlon & 1Ghz Duron, both's cache runs at 1Ghz. Just that the duron only has half as much as the Athlons.

CPU-Z identifies it as an Athlon.
CPU-Z shows L2 cache 64kb, so it is indeed a Duron.
Thanks for the tip! |

If it's identifying the speed, and cache correctly,I don't think I would worry about it much

I'm not at all concerned with the outcome, & shall give it no more effort, except for the occasional rant. |
