How many of you guys actually Lap a heatsink before you use it?
I bought a Athlon 2400+ a SLK-800 heatsink and a 52 CFM Sunon fan for the CPU, and Arctic Silver 3. Can you guess I want to overclock?
Well, I was just going to put the AS3 on the heatsink and clip it on, but if this lapping this will help a heck of a lot... I just don't know how much it costs for 5 sheets of sand paper

I only lap my HSs if there are visible defects in the smoothness. Otherwise, I do not trust my craftsmanship to keep my sanding level enough to make the connection between the HS and processor better than it was originally. To me, thermal goop is sufficient in making the minor imperfections a negligible problem. |

I always eventually lap. Maybe not when I first get the sink, but eventually. Always brings the temps down. I wouldn't do it if my sink had a mirror finish though.
I Get a picture frame from the dollar store, throw away the frame, keep the glass. get 200, 400, and 800 (these are just what I use, you'll find alot of different opinions) wet/dry sandpaper. You have to have wet/dry.
I squirt under the paper with water, this is a trick to suction the paper to the glass. lay the paper down and wipe around it with a towel. tape it. squirt the top of the paper. When the sink is sanded a bit, it will kind of suction itself to the paper, if you take your time it's really pretty easy. Oh, and I always sand in a circle.
This is becoming unimportant now, as most of the sinks now have mirror or near mirror finishes. |

Lapping is when you try and get imperfections out of the HSF to make the Proccesor run cooler. And for your other question I would reccommend that you make a new thread as not to take this one off topic. Hope this helps.
EDIT: Some people also lap proccessors(Intel ones with heatspreaders not the AMD's without one)
