the AMD 2400 operates at 2ghz, but has a quantispeed arch. but if I were you, I would buy the AMD. If you have 130 to spend on a mobo, i would say that would be enough. I am going to buy a 1700+ but i only spent 80 on my mobo. If you get some good memory that helps too, with DDR. Good luck with it, i am also building a comp. |

If the choice was between the XP2400 or the P4 2.4, then go for the XP, it is faster...

Athlon XP 2400 $153
asus A7N8X $145
=total==== $298
Pentium® 4 2.4B $180
asus P4S533 $97
=total==== $277
both have their pro's and cons.. if u want to overclock, the p4 would be faster (note that the XP would only be faster at the same rated speed) |

The total prices you list are for completely different mainboard types.
The AMD board is the latest and greatest nForce 2 chipset with dual ddr 400 support, serial ata, 6 channel sound (that really nice setup nvidia has) and 3 DIMM slots, 5 PCI in a regular ATX factor.
The Intel board is a single channel ddr 333 with 4 channel "AC'97" audio, integrated video, 2 DIMM slots, and 3 PCI in a micro ATX form factor.
From newegg.com:
Athlon XP 2400+ OEM 185$
Asus A7NX Retail 119$ (nForce 2)
Total 304$
P4 2.4 ghz 187$
ASUS P4PE/L 121$ (Intel chipset)
Total 308$

I could go for either (and have both)
I prefer to OC from an enthusiasts point of view and as a hobby---
Ive had "most" AMD since the K6-3 and a couple Intels during that time (Celeron 366@645 and P3-600@900) some of the early AMD oc'd for us, some were more then stubborn-
The Athlon line promised more performance and OC'ability where the Celeron/P3 sorta fizzled on us,--great overclocks thru out the Athlon line from 750 on (I still run a 750 @1066 in my server for years now) and have a 1.4/266 sittin hear with some PC150 mem on a KT7E waiting to be energized for SOME project---
Im partial to P4 at the moment (my early XP OC project didnt go as well as hoped-1600@1700 on a Dragon+) and use a 2.4b/IT7Max2/OCZ3500/Ti4600 setup retail cooled@3.06 for my hobby Clearcase gamer---P4 gives simple overclocks, extreme memory performance can be quiet with no heat drama---
The newest XP seem to be working out real well as far as OC'ing goes---new boards/chipsets and mem go hand in hand and have been producing good results---
Cheap high performance MB for P4 is the Abit BD7 II about 85$---add some inexpensive XMS PC2700mem (256 about 75$ at Fry's) with a 2.4b w/retail heatsink and you have a cheap possible 3 Ghz system with extremely high memory performance running quiet and cool... |

I might add all ive built in the past 6 months is P4 systems (about a dozen) but myself if I had a new project in mind might spend my $$$ on a new XP and one of the NEWEST boards available w/mem accordingly (only because I have a maxed out P4 setup)
---guess I didnt assist much and hope I didnt furthur make it more difficult to decide---

AMD of course... look for an JUIHB in a 2100 for a good clocker. Some of the same in the 1700+'s are doing as good.
You know as well as I do that it's a hit and miss deal on individual chips. But, those are the best now. |
