If I underclock a CPU, should it run cooler? |

Yep, it will run a little bit cooler (few degrees), depends on your CPU model and how much you underclock it ...
But why? .. a good HS should help you get the best out of your CPU at cooler temps |

well Im gonna build this other PC, but I wanna do it on the cheap, I was gonna get a Duron 1100 for it which is easily to fast for it.
Too fast!?!?!?!?!?! how can a PC be too fast I here you say
well its to be a standalone dvd movie/ mp3 player etc
I have an old fan from when I had an Athlon 800 - it was a good fan, so I will probably be using this, and it is very quiet.
Was just thinking that if the fan was not enough to keep the heat down I could underclock the processor a little.
Im sure though that the fan should be sweat though. |

It might run cooler, but I doubt that it will by much, unless you lower the voltage, as that is what generaes the heat. Maybe try and pick up a 1700+ Tbred or something, they only run at 1.6v.

I vote for the T-bred 1700+ also.
It leaves you with the option for more power at any time.
Default core is 1.6V, but at stock speeds this can be reduced (if the MB allows) making for a more energy efficient machine.
When underclocking, the core can be further reduced.
With the 1700+ T-bred's unlocked multiplier, many combinations are available to experiment with!
Oh, did I mention that these also overclock easily to 1900+ levels and higher?
Less than $55 gets you a lot of bang for your buck!
Your mileage may vary. |

Even on a K7S5A (no multiplier or voltage adjustment - not even FSB apart from 100/133 in the factory BIOS) I got it to 147fsb (1613-1617mhz) using Cheepo's BIOS. Can't wait to see what it can do when I get a better mobo. |

Do you ever get the CMOS resetting for no apparent reason? |
