| Can i overclock?
i recently overclocked my cpu and when i rasied the FSB by 5mhz instead of 3mhz my PC wouldnt POST and i had to reset the CMOS. i have 1 intake and 1 outake fan and a pretty junky heatsink. could better cooling have helped the situation, and let me overclock more? |

Upping your voltage might help as well. Just a bit though, don't want to max it out w/o real good cooling. A little bit won't kill it, but should give you a little more stability. |

Better cooling is not *always* the key to better overclocking. While it usually is, it GREATLY depends on your chip as well. For example, an XP2100+ Paolmino can't go much higher cuz the chip is practically maxxed out. It's Tbred brothers and sisters have amazing potential. I would suggest getting a good hsf, such as the SLK800 and seeing where it goes from there. If your case has spots for more case fans, throw 'em in.

Now I'm confused. You have one of the fastest chips out on the market and you want more? What is it that you're doing that you need such amazing power? I would assume that it's gotta be something like heavy graphics rendering, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh, well that's a completely different story. You might want to try getting a nice hsf and go from there. If your board doesn't have it, try active northbridge cooling (actually helps a lot sometimes).

If you are tweaking the bus speed you can also run into limitations with what is on board on your mobo as well as your expansion cards because you are essentially overclocking your entire system pushing all your components to the limit. If you hit 166 FSB speed then your components will return to their normal clock speed but your processor will be extremely oc'd. You can also unlock your processor and overclock only that.
Good luck... |

A good thermal compound like Arctic Silver 3 will do wonders. Since you have the latest CPU and motherboard why not go with the latest heatsink? The Thermalright SLK-900 just came out and looks to be very good. Pick out an 80mm fan with the most cfm output and dBA sound you can stand and see if that helps. What brand/type of memory are you using? With PC3200 or PC3500 you'll have alot more headroom with a fsb overclock. |
