well here I am, an Overclocking newb with a simple question :)
i got a xp1700+, using an ep-8rda+ mobo with corsair xms pc3500 cl2 ram and an alpha pal8045 cpu cooler... i think the specs should be good enough to give it an OC-ing try ...
now the question:
how to unlock my xp1700 thoroughbred B? =)
i read on several pages that many new "B" XPs are already unlocked, but this one doesnīt have any bridge connected in the L1 and L3 areas, so i have my doubts that itīll be already unlocked...
"so why donīt you just try OCing it?" ... well my 8rda+ will arrive tomorrow or the day after :) |

Good choice, i'm using the 8RDA+ and a xp2100 oc'ed to 166FSB (2700 speeds)
If your's isn't connected you need an overclocking kit to fill the gaps.. |

first of all thx for the answer
but as i said i am a newb in overclocking, so i donīt know what an overclocking kit is
but if you are referring to the "holes" seperating the pins in the L1/L3 area (Iīve read about them some time ago): I canīt see them, it seems if there are no "holes" |

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's unlocked. Does it have the laser cuts in the L1 bridge? If not, it's unlocked. Mine doesn't have the laser cuts, and the bridges are NOT connected, but it's still unlocked. At least, the range from 5.0 to 12.5 is. I'm not sure if you could unlock multipliers above that or not. |

hmmm sounds good
I think Iīll wait for my Mainboard to arrive and then just try to change the multiplier, if it doesnīt work I think Iīll try this: http://www.lostcircuits.com/cpu/amd_unlock/1a.shtml
this should work for thouroughbred B CPUs, and I know itīs one of those |

You might find this article helpful: Overclocking the AMD Thoroughbred XP1700+ http://www.amdworld.co.uk/mg.htm
Last week, I put together my new system, with a 1700+ from NewEgg (.com). It was a T-Bred B. I managed to overclock it to 1999.97Mhz (I tried my hardest to get over 2000Mhz!)
I had no 'unlocking' to do. I was able to overclock using the motherboard jumpers/switches on the Asus A7V333, but then found it easier to overclock through the BIOS. It would appear that my memory isn't handling the overclock too well, and is the cause of it failing. Assuming I get my hands on some higher performance memory, I could probably O/C a bit higher.
just fyi!

The 1700+ T-bred B's are (for now) unlocked from the factory.
With your new Mobo you will not need to unlock it just set it to factory specs to get your system up and running stable first. Then up the multiplier / fsb until it won't boot...most good overclocks on this chip I've see have been at or around 11.5~12.5 x 166 at default voltage or just a slight bump to 1.65v...good luck with your mobo/cpu/memory combo you should have good results.

One thing to note though, I doubt you'll be able to use an multipliers above 12.5. When I tried with mine (same CPU; nonplus version of the same board) it just bumped it down to 11x100. I'm not sure if that's because the CPU simply can't handle multipliers above 12.5 or if you could unlock those by connecting two of the CPU pins. Regardless, you can do plenty with the options you do have right out of the box.
I got mine up to 2.3GHz; 12.5 x 184. And that's with Crucial PC2100 ram. |
