When I boot my PC (Biostar M7VIG Pro, Athlon 1700), it shows the CPU temp when it boots. The temp shows 39C which sounds rather high considering I just turned it on. It eventually settles at 50C when running.
Is this normal or do I have a sensor problem?

Why do you care? If it's ~50 while running there's nothing to worry about. The die heats up pretty quickly.
I think when I enter bios it goes to ~50c in 25seconds etc.

I am not sure if the temp when just starting really matters.. Like muno said, does it matter very much if it settles down to 50C. |

My only concern was the sensor. I was surprised it got that hot that fast. |

VaTech:
Many systems heat up fast from the moment they are turned on. There is no need to be concerned about this.
That being said I have a M7VIG Pro also (with a Palomino core XP 2000+) I think some or all of the M7VIG Pro motherboards may misrepresent the reported temperature.
Here is my reasoning:
Before burning in the CPU for 48 hours:
With the board that I recieved, the onboard temperatures seem to read on the "high" side. I had the case open on a table top, in a room where the temperature was approx 22C or less, the case temp was reading 56C and the CPU temp 60C after about 30 minutes (CPU running at full load.) I'm sure the actual case temp could not have been any more than 32C absolute max, as I had shutdown and immediately opened the case to a crack and put my hand in close to the top, near the motherboard and the air was only moderately warm. Since the case temp is in error, I am confident the CPU temp is in error also, especially since I had no problem overclocking it.
After burning in for 48 hours:
Temperatures were, case temp 45C CPU temp 59C with about the same room temp. I can barely tell the internal case temp is warmer than the room temp when I crack the case.
In reading through a number of hardware forums around the internet, the problem of reporting temps higher than they actually are seems to be a common problem with some Biostar motherboards. |

My 2100XP Tbred-B @ 2.1Ghz runs 41C full load and 36C idle..
What heatsink you have?
I have SLK-800 /w SmartFan2 2600RPM /w 4 case fans 2500RPM |

Yeah, you're fine... Even 50 is ok if thats your load temp... Once you get past 60 you might get instability... If you go past 80, then you can physically damage the CPU. |

I have my suspicions. When I installed the heat sink, I installed it improperly so that it wasn't seated completely on the chip. I essentially had it backwards. My temps were about the same.
On my kids computer, I installed two 80mm fans, one blowing in and one blowing out. The case temp never changed. When I had an Orb 3 as an HSF on that machine, the CPU temps were in the 30's. With a quieter HSF, it is in the 50's. |
