I would not skimp on a hsf considering the tualitin chips get hot. Try for at least a Volcano 6Cu or a Thermalright sk6.

What size would I need? 80mm, 120mm, or what? I dunno seeing that I have never done any upgrading to processors or ever built a system. Also, the other one that I am going to attempt to upgrade is an Emachines 466is. Currently it has a 466mhz Celly. I am going to change it from a PPGA to an FC-PGA so that it will work with the 700mhz Celly that I am pulling out of the HP.

embj that's a good question that's answer probably lies more with how much are you looking to spend on a cooler exactly? There are several 60mm heatsink/fans like Thermaltakes 6CU and 6CU+ that would work and not be to expensive. Or you could buy a "performance" copper heatsink like the Thermalright SK-800 and choose your own 80mm fan. This would be a tad more expensive. Price/performance you probably can't go wrong with either the Thermaltake 6CU or 6CU+. |

On the one for the 1.3ghz I am willing to spend up to around $15. It needs to be small because that case that it is going in is very small. It is hard as he!! to get in there and work because it is so crammed together. Now the other fan, I am going to put in the machine that I primarily use which is an Athlon t'bird 1.4ghz. I am thinking on getting the Volcano 9 maybe with the coolmod on it. I am planning to take out the fan that is in there (Athlon sys) now and put in the E-Machines seeing that it is around 60mm. So to sum it all up and make it easier to understand....
HP XE748 (w/ 1.3ghz Celly)....Volcano 6
HP XT983 (w/ 1.4ghz T'bird)....Volcano 9
Emachines 466is (w/ 700mhz Celly)....Old fan from the 1.4ghz t'bird. |

Sounds like you're on your way to upgrading those CPUs. Good luck and post back with your results when all of your stuff arrives. Oh, almost forgot, you said you've never upgraded a CPU before. You do know about thermal compound right? Just a thought. |

Thermal compound is used between the heatsink and CPU core for heat transferrance. You can find Arctic Silver III(the best themal compound IMO) @ any of the links I provided before. Go here for instructions on how to apply(this is important): http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...structions.htm This will show you how to properly apply it and give you much better cooling. |
