| Volcano11 vs. Thermalright SLK-900!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you think the Volcano11 or the Thermalright SLK-900 would keep my cpu cooler?
Will the slk-900 or the slk-800mount on my asus a7n8x deluxe mobo?

The way the SLK-900 mounts, it puts the large curved side right over your tall capacitors right next to the processor socket. I doubt you can use that HS.
As for the Volcano 11, measure 33 millimeters from the center of your processor socket and see if there is any room left before hitting those capacitors just below the socket. If they do not hit, then you should be able to use the volcano 11. It is 66mm wide int he direction of those capacitors (and 70mm side left to right on the mobo).
The volcano 11 looks really sweet. I do not know how it performs compared to the SLK-800A (which is the other HS I'd recommend that should fit your mobo, unlike the SLK-900), but it can't be far off. It has a really cool slot mounted manual fan switch. Of course, if you got the SLK-800A with a software controllable fan, you could use Speedfan software to slow the fans via the OS.
Of the two, try the Volcano b/c the 900 won't fit your mobo. Otherwise, go with the 800A.

As far as which will be cooler, definitely the SLK. I believe it would be tight, but according to thermalright, it will fit. The Volcano stacks up against the SLK because it is so much cheaper and quieter. Compatibility chart |

Well, according to that there chard, bending capacitors will be necessary. I don't know about you, but I'd feel pretty silly if I bent a capacitor too far and snapped one off.
Yup, that would be teh suxx.
Edit: WTF?? ***: bending capacitors required, severe bending
You have GOT to be kidding me. They are saying that it's compatible only if you bend your capacitors severely? Now THAT is lame.

What does severe bending mean? Does anyone know what thermoelectric cooling is and all that peltier stuff? Thermaltake is making some king of thermalelectric volcano 11 thing. Check out their website for all the details (sorry i dont have a link). |

yeah ive seen the site, its wierd hey, got no idea how it really works.
Has a little plate under the heatsink that stays real cold, something like that, too technical, too pricey, its about 200 here in Australia.
Think ill stick with air cooling, the volcano 11. |

Peltier coolers aren't new to processor cooling. They were abandoned as cores got smaller and hotter. Water cooling became somewhat of a standard for exotic cooling, replacing the peltier as the weapon of the elite overclocker. (I am, of course, skipping over active cooling like the old Kryotech setups)
It became too hard to keep the hot side of the cooler cool because the peltier adds heat of it's own to the heat generated by the processor. A peltier could be use effectively with a water cooling system, but it a bit of overkill as the peltier usually won't get the processor into the extreme sub-zero range that would make it worth the cost; active or liquid nitrogen cooling would be better to employ.
Another downfall of the peltier is that if it were to fail while strapped atop your thunderbird, the results could be disasterous. | |
