I was curious what cpu would give me the best bang for the buck, so I opend excel and graphed prices vs. speed.
The smaller slices are what have the best price to speed compared to the other cpu's in the AthlonXP series.
The 2100+ and 2200+ seem to be my best chioce.

2100+ is definitely the sweet spot right now, as cost per performance is concerned. The 2100 is also great for overclocking if that's what you intend to do. |

Hm... I don't know about that... the 2100+ might actually not have more overclock capabilities than the 1700+. Mine is at 2.3GHz. I haven't seen anywhere yet that someone got a 2100+ even up to that. |

I would be interested to see how you created the pie chart. That is not how I would visually display it. But, I appreciate the effort you put into it.
I agree with EndobioticChaos that the XP1700+ is a sweet performer for such a dirt cheap price. I paid $49.99 including shipping from newegg a couple months ago.
Isn't a 2100+ about twice the price for about 20% performance improvement? Plus, the key thing your graph excludes is what will the PC be used for. Mine is an entertainment PC so the XP2100+'s slightly better CD/DVD burning isn't worth an extra $50 of expenditures. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. |

my 2100 has a higher top end than my 1700
the 2100 is rocksolid at 2332 (13.5x172) - @1.75v
it will run at 2.4 or more but not 24/7 stable in folding and I want to keep my fans to a minimum
never could get the 1700 that high - only about 1.95
the 1700 is more bang for the buck, but $90 for a 2.3 chip isn't exactly expensive |

I put anythin lower than 2100+ in the condenced other section because I dont plan to go lower than 2100+. So the TRUE best bang for the buck is in that other section but I plan to go with 2100+ or 2500+.
(I may get a second cpu (1700+) to play with though)

The key to a high overclock ability is to get the "B" version of the T-bred. The original is not known to be a great overclocker.
The easiest way to get a "B" to my knowledge is to get a 2100+OEM from NewEgg. They list it as a "B" chip. I got one, it is.
The 2100+ is running 2,160MHz @1.7V.
My previous chip, an "A" 1700+ could "only" make 1,600 MHz @1.65V. |

My 2100+ Tbred-B is running 2260 (that's 2600+, or maybe 2800+...it's hard to say, there are so many variants on what the rating should be). I expect to get it a bit higher before I'm done.
Many others have gotten theirs over 2300 with air cooling (mine is also air cooled). One reported 2500 something, air cooled (lucky guy!).
If you got your 1700+ over 2200Mhz, you got real lucky.
