Hi all, I got a dell 4550 today, and first let me say, I can barely hear it! I've got an AMD 900 running too and it sounds like a freight train compared to the Dell! I was just wondering if it would be alright to put it in my desk. I have a door to my right designed to hold the tower, but I wanted to make sure I'd still get enough airflow. Would it be safe to enclose the tower? There's an airhole on the side of the enclosure, but I thought I'd check. Thanks!!!! |

I'm not sure how good the cooling on your dell is but when my parents had dell dimension 266 system it was really quiet but then the motherboard died(we think it was because of the heat) when techsupport told us to reseat the CPU I touched the heatsink and it was way to hot to touch(had to wait 3-5 minutes before we could touch it) and the case temp was probably around a 100f. No compains here however*built new system* .
The dell only had one fan and it was the power supply fan and even that was a pretty low performance fan but it was quiet.

Oh I forgot when I was working on my grandparents Dell Celeron 533mhz system the HSF on it looked smaller than most pentium 1 HSF's I've seen. |

Try it and see if the case gets hot. Touching the case sides ont he outside will usually be a good sign that you need to remove the case from the enclosure. You can also use apps like Speedfan or Motherboard monitor 5 to check the temps of the system.

LOL, once when I bought a system (last one I bought BTW) the heatsink wasn't even on the processor, just loose in the case. System kept crashing and got a shock when I took the cover off. It was only a P233MMX though, and still runs ok to this day afaik.
