| Getting a Mac G3 ZIF Heatsink
Among my two desktop PCs and my Intel based laptop I have a Macintosh 8600.
Macs were my first computers. I had the original 128 on back in 1984. The 128 stood for 128K of RAM - that's KB not MB. I upgraded that to 512K by desoldering the RAM chips and putting bigger ones on. During the years, I've had the Mac SE, 7500 and now a 8600.
Even though the 8600 is 6 yrs old, it is still quite usable. It has a Voodoo 2 card, an IDE card and a USB card. I am about to upgrade the 604-200 processor to a G3 processor. I bought a ZIF card that replaces the 604 card and I bought a G3-350 ZIF processor. Howeve, the CPU didn't come wit h a heat sink and I'm having a hard time finding one.
I was wondering if the PC heatsink/fans fit these G3's. PC coolers are in abundance. |

| Here is a site that sells heatsink kits for all Apple CPUs. You will have to assemble the HSF yourself, but they include everything to do so. The "G3 Chiller" should suit your needs and costs $15 (bottom of the page). You can order this stuff through a form on their website.
To answer your question, there is no perfect fit for a PC HSF and a Mac socket. The G3 socket is slightly larger than the old 486, but a tad too small for the Socket 7. If you had an OEM G3 heatsink, you would be able to mod a Socket 7 HSF using the clip from the old G3 HS. If you can get your hands on one, and want to know how, check here
Hope this helps! |

Those seem to be for the 266/300 G3's, which are soldered. The 350 is a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket. I don't think they are the same.

Go straight to your local MUG (Mac users group)---do not pass go do not burn up your stuff---plenty of folks available online as well---id goto one of the Apple groups within Yahoo or somewhere similar---should be a simple fix... |

I went to the forums - nobody has these. It looks like I'm going to have to use a modified socket 7.

I have worked with macs for about 15 years now and heatsink are not really needed for macs..not in the traditional form. I remember that the pm 7100 and 8100 actually came with peltier junctions on them. I used to work for Shreve Systems and we bought overstock of those peltier junctions about 40,000.
