I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to installing CPU's on the mobo's, with the thermal compound and heatsink, etc. I've done it a few times but have had heat issues. I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong, i put on as little compound as possible and spread it where its supposed to go! Is there a good detailed website anyone knows of to explain things simply? |

The biggest things that could be wrong are:
1- be sure the HS is a good one or at least rated for the processor you are using it on
2- be sure to put it on correctly. If you put it on backwards, it will leave a gap and not cool well at all. Most HSs have a cut out portion for the raised part of the socket (this part of the socket is where the hinge of the installation bar is and usually says "Socket A" or whatever type of socket it is.) Make sure the cut out part of the HS is oriented towards to raised part of the HS.

I edited your link to fix it. It cut off the last part after the "^". Great links, guys. Thanks. |

the videos say not to use thermal compound, but a thermal pad...i've always used a compound, thought everyone did. tell me if this is correct: whenever i get a new heatsink i always scrape off the thermal stuff thats already on it and put my artic silver on it and the cpu...however the video suggests i keep the original thermal stuff on the heatsink and only apply my compound to the cpu. |

it also says you should always use thermal pads for prolong periods of time..and that only compound should be used for minimal times, like testing, etc. |

i wonder what minimal times means . i would think that most people here change there setup alot . so grease would be ok .

I went to one of AMD's tech expos once. The whole pad/goo thing seemed to come from the goo drying out and not conducing heat as well as a pad does. |

You dont need compound on the cpu AND the heatsink....maybe thats where the problems are coming from....you just need like 1 little dot on the cpu....the pressure of the heatsink will spread it out.
Personally I was always under the impression that the grease was better at transferring heat....I figured the pad was just a little more foolproof and/or convenient.
And remember, sometimes big manufacturers have reasons other than "whats best"....maybe they want to send the easiest method to keep down the problems and phone calls.
I suppose the best thing to do is find out what the overclockers do....they are the pros.
