266 mhz board 333 fsb processor?

I have an Abit KX7-raid motherboard and its of the 266 mhz variety. I have read differing views on whether 266 motherboards will run the Barton processors with the 333 fsb and increased cache so I was hoping that maybe someone could clear up the confusion for me. The settings in the Bios have the correct multipliers for the 333 fsb so I would think the board should probably be able to handle the increase?

Any ideas?

whilst you may be able to up the fsb to 333, you will experience problems if you can't lock the pci and agp buses to their relative speeds. I also recommend a new board.

Also there is the issue of the bios. If it doesnt register the extra l2 cache I dont think it will even be used. So it'll be just a XP tbred now not a barton and be stable at 333fsb but your mobo prolly wont be. Ahh its a mess-just play it safe. If the mobo doesnt list it-or any bios revisions dont mention barton support. Get a new mobo. Can get a Nforce2 bare bones for under $100. now days and rev. 2 of the asus supports the 400mhz fsb bartons soon to be out. Might wanna keep that in mind.

If the board has a 1/5 divider, then the AGP/PCI frequencies will default back to 66/33 once you change the FSB to 166... I have an EPoX 8k3a+ board that doesn't "officially" support the 166 fsb processors, but it will run them just fine because it has the correct dividers for the AGP and PCI buses.

This pic isn't mine...but it's of the KX7-333 variety.
The story isn't so much about hardware compatibility, as it is about ABIT's reluctance to release a BIOS revision for it for a couple reasons......
