| How to increase voltages for overclocking?
hi i have an althonxp 2000+ running at a slightly higher fsb speed. instead of 133 mhz it's at 138mhz, giving me an overall performance boost from 1.67mhz to 1.73mhz. it runs stable at this point at constant and controllable temperatures. my mobo does not allow me to change the speed of the processor, only the fsb. it is an asus a7m266.
i would like to know if i can experiment with upping the voltages. is this something i can do in my bios, like with the fsb? or will i need to take apart my case and mess wtih jumpers - something i'm hesitant to start doing.
i've seen charts where people my processor have regularly gotten above 2ghz in raw clock speed. i don't want/need to go that fast but i'm having fun dabbling with minor overclocking adjustments.
thanks! |

The only way you can do it is if you modify the bridges on top of the processor that control voltage.
However, it might involve not only conductive paint, but if you need to actually sever a connection it could get pretty sticky. A link to the combinations: http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20000711/amd-03.html
The article was written before the athlonXP came out, however, as far as I know the voltage bridges are the same.

I have my voltage upped to 1.85, the max for my board. Running at 1800MHz. I didn't modify any bridges either. |

Sorry, somehow I missed that you were using an Asus board (I saw ecs for some reason) and assumed that you were using a board not supporting bios adjustment of voltages.
Never mind |

what can upping the voltage do for overclocking. Where does it ocme into play?

I believe it gives a cpu the added power it needs to function when shoving higher fsb or clock speeds down its throat.
