| How do you find out what motherboard will work with a processor?
I have an AMD Athlon xp Palomino 1600+ 1.40GHZ [model # ax1600dmt3c]
I had a BIOSTAR M7VKD board, but it is no longer working. Would it be in my best interest to buy another M7VKD or is it a good opportunity to upgrade to a better board? I am not sure which board to buy. Any advice? |

Just about any modern "socket A" motherboard would work. I guess by modern I mean built within the last 18 months or so.
Most websites tell you right in the description which processors work...or you could go directly to manufacturers website.
I dont know any particular motherboards off the top of my head but Im sure there are at least 30 good ones to choose from.

It's more a features thing for Socket A boards, I think. Unlike Intel CPU boards, Socket A is pretty well the same all the way down the line.
So, look at what features you would like (eg type of RAM, IDE speeds, firewire, USB, on-board extras like sound, NIC), then shop around in your price range and see what there is.
I'm a fan of EPOX and Soyo boards, mainly, with Asus also a favourite.
Have a look for what CPU's are supported before you buy, and make sure it'll work with your current hardware (eg RAM, vid card) or be prepared to upgrade.
Happy Easter hunting!
Cheers

It's a good time to upgrade to an nForce2 chipset and some DDRam. This way you'll also be set up to upgrade your cpu down the line also. Your pally is probably the max that the old Biostar's KT133A chipset can boot. |

Another Option is the K7S5Apro (ECS) it will handle just about every chip out there (pretty sure it will take the bartons aswell) Has SDR and DDR support (only use one type at a time) has USB2.0 and is a reliable mobo, tho not the fastest by any means, but cheap and features are good. |

No the ecs k7s5a doesnt run the barton cpu's. It runs all Palomino and tbred XP's but not the bartons. Least last time I checked their bios flashes. Dont hope for any support for it either its a budget board. I have one here-hence why I got a nforce2 mobo. I have heard of some useing the 2600 TBRED version. Which will be the last tbred cpu I think.
PS. the pro just adds usb 2.0 support of which you cant use pci slot 1 and usb at the same time. Shared port and all.
