Hey people,
Im thinking about possibly upgrading my cpu. As of now I have an amd athlon tbird 950mhz running a 200fsb on a shuttle ak31 mobo. If I upgrade to 1.33ghz cpu (which is the max this board will allow) can I still use the same heatsink/fan?
Also, how is a person supposed to know when you should get another heatsink/fan after upgrading to a faster processor? Any guidlines?
Thanks and Happy Easter

Really all you have to do is try the heatsink/fan and see what your temperatures run. I know that tbirds run hot. Or you could just go ahead and bite the bullet and get a new heatsink/fan, I am sure you could get an adequate one for $15 or less.

are you using the stock h/f (retail) or did you add your own? frankly the difference between your current cpu and your proposed upgrade is so small that:
1) the upgrade isn't very cost-effective, speed-wise
2) you can probably get by with the current h/s provided you clean & prep it properly. what you are temps now w/it? |

almost 400mhz is still a nice speed bump though.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for your replies. Im using the stock fan/heatsink that came with my current cpu. Right now the temp is 47 degrees c.
As John Prophet said, I guess i should just check the temp if i do decide to upgrade.
Thanks John, PresterJohn and JerryGarcia

Yeah, like every one said just keep an eye on those temps. I installed my first retail HSF this week on an AthlonXP 2000 (for a friend) and was pleasantly surprised that I got 42c under moderate load. I'd always used aftermarket HSF's in the past.

I Agree with these guys but let me tell you that the old T-Birds 1.2 and 1.3 produce ENORMOUS AMOUNTS OF HEAT.!! (I have a 1.2 one). So be very careful.!
