I'd go along with what's been said... go for the DDR ram first, then you can always upgrade the mobo later.

I'm using the K7S5A with DDR ram myself ATM, but hoping to upgrade to an Epox mobo in the near future.

Which will give me the better bang for the buck. I am leaning towards the RAM.

First off. Yur in the UK so if'en crcucial was bought here it would be twice that. Half as much as I listed for kingston and well guess what-its still cheaper. Secondly you asked which would speed up the compiler the most-thats cpu as more than 512mb mem for the task is useless. Say what you mean. If you wanted to know which was the most sensible upgrade path-sure go ddr. But that isnt what you asked now is it. LOL

PC2700 will make a difference, not sure if it will for compiling, but for overall system performance gain, it will... As far as the CPU... You can get a 2100+ tbred B from newegg for under $80, I don't know if they ship to the UK though... But that processor can be overclocked to 2700+ speeds without too much trouble, provided your motherboard is capable... I have that CPU with an EPoX 8K3A+ (KT333) and have it stable at 2700+ speeds.

Xteeme is right ... the RAM probably won't help you much for compiling ... just everything else! But on a budget you probably couldn't get much of a cpu upgrade either since the 1700+ is still quite good. From experience - going from a t'bird 1400mhz (FSB/RAM @ 266mhz (well 133 really)) to a t'bred 1800mhz (FSB/RAM @ 360mhz (180)) was not very noticable (for audio editing which uses the system similarly to compiling).
Ummm ... I'm not helping you either am I ... Go with the PC2700 RAM cos you won't notice the difference between a 1700+ and a 2000+ whereas you'll be able to keep the RAM for your upgrade (and throw the old ram back in the system when you sell it off or whatever you do with it ... ).
Regards,
Elad.
