Cooling a Duron : unexpected result

Just for fun today I decided to change the heatsink on my 1300 Duron. It isn't overclocked nor did it overheat.

I tried 3 different HSFs : the retail one that came with my Duron who's doing its job perfectly, a brand new retail HSF from a XP 2400 and a nameless one that is bigger than the Duron retail and the fan turns 1000 rpm faster.

All were carefully prepared with arctic silver and the CPU was cleaned and repasted between tries.

To my surprise, the Duron retail is cooler than the others by 3 to 5 C. How come ?

I expected the best result from the 2400 retail... which turned out to be the worst of the three.

No good explanation, but....

Did you let each one run for a couple of days? The Arctic Silver takes a little while to set up and achieve maximum effectiveness. Just a thought.

I'd have thought the XP2400 would have done better too.

No they all ran with fresh AS for 2 hours only each. That was just a quick test.

Maybe because the 2400+ hsf has a thin base while the duron hsf has a thicker base so it can absorb more heat quicker? I'm not sure, but I've noticed a similar phenomenon when I used a hifh performance cooler with alot of fins, just real thin, and it didn't cool as good as an "el cheapo" $2 hsf... Hmmm, interesting though.

My ThermalTake Volcano7 keeps mine almost 20*C cooler than the one that came with my AMD Duron 1300.

I think it's because of the mass of the heatsinks, not the size that matters.

That's kinda what I meant to say through all my babbling... But, also surface area has a lot to do with performance as well.

Both increased surface area and mass are the key to lower temps when looking at a hs. Material is the last important one. The more mass the more heat absorbed but the more surface area the more convection which is responsible for releasing heat to the outside air from HS. This is why they have micro fin technology and still sue a thick base with it. Theis has been the best solution so far. even the "heatpipe" cant compete with good ole brute force when it comes to cooling.

By mass you mean weight ?

The XP retail is the heaviest of my bunch, but still...

You got it skuz. Mass means more metal hence it's heavier. You give that mass as much surface area you can and you have the combinations of an efficient cooling solutions. Mine weights 275 gr and have a three pin clip (slim volcano 8 se). According to the amd spec sheet for my 1700 palo they recommended 300 gr at least.
