| AMD XP2500+ Barton Question
I have a quick question ( probably a stupid one!) I just bought a barebones system with an XP 2500+ Barton, Asrock R838 SiS746FX motherboard. I put 512 DDR 2100 in it, The CPU is being recognized as AMD 1900+ and running at 1467 mhz. I asked around about this and was told I need to be using DDR 2700 memory for the CPU to run at 1830 mhz. I am not that educated when it comes to CPU' s, MB or Memory.
Can someone confirm this for me so I know I did not get ripped off (it happened to me before!)
Thanks A Bunch!! |

The Athlon Bartons require a FSB(Front Side Bus) of 166Mhz to run at their stock speed. You're FSB is set at 133 or maybe 100 currently, so the CPU speeds are not up where they should be. PC2700 DDR ram is required to get the FSB up to 166mhz and be stable. So, to answer your question, you will need DDR to be at PC2700 for you to be able to get the most out of your CPU.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention, that if/when you get the PC2700 memory, you will probably need to go into your BIOS settings for your Motherboard and change the FSB to 166. I'm gonna do some checking to see if that motherboard supports the fast FSB. BRB. |

No problem, well I already checked on the mobo, and I'm glad to hear that it does support it. You'll love it when you get that thing running at full speed!!

Thank you VERY much for this thread.
A few days ago I bought a jetway kt-400 m/b with athlon 2500+ processor.
The shop also put 512meg of 2100 memory in.
As above the processor was coming up as a 1900 and running about 1400 mhz.
I took it back to the shop and the guy tried a different motherboard, same thing.
Now he has ordered me a new processor thinking the 2500 is duff!...
I'll print this out and take it to the shop, he obviously needs educating.
Thanks again.

ya apparently that shop isn't too smart
It only requires PC2700.. I bought PC3200 so I have some room to upgrade later down the line so if I want to upgrade the proc I won't have to upgrade the memory too |

If the mobo supports asynch you CAN use pc2100 and barton. Run it at 83% of fsb speed. But it does cause slow downs due to latency at NB chip. SO long story short. new build-do it right. Go pc2700 (ddr333) and run it the way it should be.

Being that you got a 2500+ which can easily be overclocked to 3200+, i would suggest PC3200 memory, then you can pump up the FSB all the way to 200. |

I agree. Wish I did. But no-anyhow I got a killer deal on pc2700 so it was ok. 256mb pc2700 cas 2.5 for $35 ship Kingston and lifetime warrenty. Gonna hand down to me mom. That 512mb will do her 2200+ tbred some justice. I can get that up to about 1992mhz. 12x166. Runs pretty good. I gave her that cpu too-ah what are sons for eh? hehe. LOL. |
