| Processors Over 1.6Ghz...
Hey all... I have another question...LoL. I am sorry, but I am just curious and like to ask questions. I was talking to my friend today and hes got a P4 1.6Ghz, or something like that, and he is talking about overclocking it. I was just wondering when ever you get over 1.3Ghz is it even necessary to overclock? Thanks.

This has nothing to do with what you asked but there is discussion at this other thread(what to do with badly worded topic) on here about people posting threads by just saying "help" or "question". Which I think is not such a big deal. Just wanted to let you know that. Check it out and tell them what you think. |

Many times its not necessary to overclock... its more for the bragging rights
"I got the 1700+ up to 3000" type thing *shrug*
That and its 'the cool thing to do' so of course people have to do it! |

I wouldnt risk it but there are types that has itchy hands and like to fiddle around with it. The "anything over 1.3" dosent apply for everyone. For some its more than enough but others say that do video editing, every little bit helps. Mostly though I think its just hobby or like said, bragging rights.

I overclocked my Athlon XP 2800 barton just for the fun of it, and I wanted to run my PC3200 corsair memory sync'd to the FSB. So, I fiddled and fiddled when I first got it together, and settled on 194 MHz front side bus with a stock multiplier, giving me 2425 MHz CPU speed. Not a bad overclock at all, in my book. All in all, I probably gained only a few 3DMarks, or FPS in Unreal Tournament 2k3, but I did it because it gave me something to do. And I didn't want to feel like the 250 bucks I spent on my water cooling rig was wasted money.
Side note: Since I've been running it for awhile, I've been able to get my EpoX 8RGA+ to 200 MHz FSB, but I lowered the CPU multiplier, as it was already running at 1.85 Volts at 2425 MHz, so I knocked it down to a 11.5X multiplier and it's now running at 1.725 volts, give or take, and at a much cooler 41 Celcius at load. I'll stop there for now, and probably leave it there indefinately.

Is it necessary to wipe your bum after you poop?
No, but if you don't then everybody knows that your computer stinks.
People who don't overclock, don't know what they're missing. It's just plain fun and rewarding. |

overclocking is mainly bragging rights . the gains can be great , thats true . but most don't get the great gains . there is ALOT to it to get the great gains AND have a stable pc . but with the speeds now it isn't needed . more fun to do .
