Toasted Duron & 8KHA+
I just bought the parts for a friends PC. Here are the specs.
1Ghz Duron
Epox 8KHA+
Antec SX1030B File Server 300watt (the Alienware case)
256Mbs PC-2100 DDR
40GB 7200PRM ATA/100 WD HD
Gainward GeForce2 Ti 64MB DDR
16x Sumsung DVD (black to go with the case
)
FOP-38 with Artic Silver2 and shim
He had recieved everything but the FOP, artic silver, and the shim. I got them that day and was about to send them to him (he lives in Indiana, and I live in Washington). But I get a call from him. He invited his friends over for a LAN party. They said they would bring a SocketA heatsink with them and so he was happy! It turns out this heatsink is just that. A heatsink. No fans or anything. Also they just lay it on top of the duron. Nothing holding it down
When I heard this I knew what was coming next. He says his PC booted up and they got into the bios, but after about 5 seconds the duron started smoking and the PC quit working
Him and his friends don't know much about PC's (which Is why I got the parts for his PC), and so they pulled a 1Ghz Althon out of another machine and tried it in my cousins. This time they used a proper heatsink with fan and clip. The PC worked for about the same amount of time, but then the same thing happend.
My question is was it the first CPU burning up that broke the mobo so the second CPU burnt up to. Or was it a defect in the mobo?
I wish I'd just put the whole thing together then sent it to him. I thought it would be a good learning experience for him (putting a PC together). Probably was, but I feel so bad about that PC!

If they don't know which heatink is proper, I would say, they fried the second one by not putting it on right, or they used a socket 7 heatsink, something too small.
It's like that, and it's like this....

The bird will still fry if they didn't put the HSF on properly. That's wierd, I had a Tbird 800 with ASII and a globalwin GORB and when the fan quit working on it, it didn't fry, just become so unstable that it crashed windows.... Lucky I guess....
If they gooped AS on the HSF they might have shorted out the CPU pins.....

bob, tell you friend to charge it to experience...
the board will usually boot after replacing a burned processor or processor upgrade.
they thought that the duron was like the k6-2. LOL!!
FreakyOCR and Rhino probably hit it on the nose about inexperienceed installers. tell them to have a professioneal the next two or three times they change the processor, agp/pci video cards and memory as well.

Thanks guys! I'm going to call my cousin tommorw (it's his birthday), and see how it's going. I don't think this is going to be a very happy B-day for him...
O well. Experience!
