    How to overclock?

    regarding the post by RamonGTP:
If your 2100+ is a TBred B you can probably raise your FSB to 166 (as long as you have memory that will run that fast) and effectively turn your 2100+ to a 2700+... Thats what I did on mine, and its been nice and stable... I did have to up the voltage to 1.775 though. If its the older Palomino core, I doubt you'd get much more out of it since its pretty close to its limit already. Oh, and if you want a program to test the STABILITY of your system, look for Prime95 and run the turture test... If there is a problem, it WILL show up on the torture test.
I would like more info about how to overclock.
I'm running a 2100+ TB with an abit nf7-m (nforce2) mobo and 512 mb pc3200 ram (just one stick, not doing dual channel yet)

anyway, is there any kind of "newbie" steps you guys can tell me so i know how to do this step by step without missing anything? i dont want to screw anything up! and i'm totally confused about voltages, FSB, multipliers, etc.

btw my system right now is 42º C at full load. also, will there be a significant speed increase?

ok first off the fsb = front side bus (what the motherboard runs at.) ,and the multiplier determine what speed the processor runs at.
    (example 100mhz fsb X a multiplier of 5 = 500mhz cpu speed)

when you set up a cpu the manual will have a table to tell you what fsb and multiplier willl work with which cpu.

overclocking your cpu is a matter of finding out how much higher you can push these setting before the cpu crashes. With a pentuim system you are limited to the fsb, with an amd it is possible to also change the multiplier. (in most cases you will have to unlock it first, and thats another story.)

I haven't used that board and don't know much about it. the fsb is set through your bios if i'm not mistaken. all you have to do is acess the bios on start up, and raise the fsb a notch and see if it works.

I haven't unlocked my xp1900 yet but by raising the fsb it thinks its a xp2100

don't mess with the voltages until you read and learn more. raising the fsb is fairly safe. (it works or it don't, i havn't lost any parts to too much fsb but it could happen) raising the voltage is a quick way to kill parts if you don't know what your doing.

the multiplier only controls the speed at which your processor works at. of course the faster it works the faster the motherboard can send instructions to the various cards at "x" fsb.

Getting the most out of your overclock is a matter of finding what combination of fsb & multiplier will give you the best performance.
I like to push mine until i find the fastest speed it will boot into windows at, and then back it down a notch or two for stability. ( don't blame windows for that blue screen when you running on the ragged edge.)

    HEAT KILLS!

your temps look to be pretty good for full load, but you still may need a bigger heatsink. Upping the fsb, multiplier, or voltage. will cause more heat. (especially voltage.)

as far as speed, It depends on what you use it for if you will see any real world difference. if you play alot of games you could see an improvement in frame rates. if you do distributed computing like i do (genome@home) you will see a big boost in your output. If your just doing word processing/surfing the net you won't see a thing.

I have been searching for info about overclocking also. I managed to find and article that goes through the process of overclocking different parts of your system. Actually, I made a really good find with this article since it talks about almost all the same components that I am planning

    Heres the link:

I have personally never used that FIC board, so you will need to read through the manual to determine if user defined bus rates can be configured.

If supported, bump the front-side bus by a few MHz via the BIOS setup. Try small increments, as you will eventually hit a max o/c. If you exceed this point, the system will not boot, and you will likely have to reset the BIOS via a motherboard jumper (read the manual closely!).

Monitor core temps via the bunlded software monitoring application. You may also need to slightly bump the core processor voltage (board must support user-defined voltages) to stablize operation, though I would not recommend anything over .10v beyond the default voltage if you are running the stock Intel heatsink cooler.

Processor voltages and specs can be found at www.sandpile.org .

As with all overclocking projects, user beware!

Then you are a definte canidate for the Book of Overclocking. Probably would be the best $15-17 you can spend, as it teaches you all about motherboard buses, bios options, processor multipliers, cooling, voltages, etc.

ok so i went into my Bios and in the manual for my mobo there is a Frequency/Voltage Control submenu, so i went into it and on teh manual it says there is a CPU Clock Ration feature but when i got into the Frequency/Voltage Control submenu it isnt there. ONly the two other options: Auto Detect PCI Clk and Spread Spectrum Modulated options. Is there something wrong with my mobo do i need to dl something or what?

Depending upon how the system shipped from the manufacturer, certain BIOS options may be disabled. You may need to apply a BIOS update, but that is probably more dangerous than overclocking if you seriously do not know anything about the BIOS configuration.
