I have some DDR 2100 memory that can do 180-190 pretty easy but at CAS 3 (I got up to almost 2.4G with an XP 2400 @ 180). Would I see a significant difference at CAS 2.5 or 3 even? Should I spring for some DDR 3200? I currently have 768MB of this stuff.
One note, it does 2.5 but for some reason while playing UT2003, it goes back to the desktop. Maybe I can raise something, maybe the RAM voltage. How high is too high for that?
EPOX 8RDA+ is my board by the way. |

If it goes back to the desktop then it means it isn't working at that speed. It depends on the chips themselves. 3 ticks isn't bad I guess as its running at 180mhz. I don't think CAS 2.5 would make that big of a difference for you. If you want to carry on overclocking higher, you probably will need to shell out for more RAM.

Well, let me ask you this. If it were just doing 2 ticks, what programs would I see this difference? Other than benchmarks, I am curious. It does 180 and I got it to 190 without any issues but at CAS 3. And get this, I could do 200 but it wouldn't complete 3Dmark2k1. At 166, I can do 2.5 easily and probably 2 if I tried it. Just not sure what is safe voltage settings for this RAM are. |

Well it sounds like you're pushing for performance so getting some higher speed RAM with a lower CAS rating would improve and possibly increase your overclock. Try 2 sticks of RAM to take advantage of the Epox 8RDA+'s dual channel capabilities. The more sticks you have(3) the less likely you are to OC your CPU to it's max. Sounds like you're almost there already though. |

Well actually I am in between right now. Just weighing the benefits of cas 2 over 3. Does the difference warrant shelling out cash for new RAM. Is there really that big of a difference in dual channel mode? And how does that improve overclocking?
Thanks for all the input. |
