Question
Slot 1 Heatsink

I need to know how to remove the factory heatsink and fan from a slot 1 CPU - P3 600B. I believe it's dead, so I want to salvage and "explore" without a hammer!!

The easiest way I found to do it requires a CD-ROM mounting screw.

Place the screw so the head is on the bottom (so the long skinny threads are going up). Position the mounting holes on the hologram side of the CPU above the screw. Push down, so the screw goes into the mounting hole, and it'll pop the mounting pin out.

You might have to use a screwdriver to get the screw out, but that's the way I got my Intel heatsink off my P3 700.

Thanks a bunch guys, the case screw (or CD ROM screw) worked fine. I now have a fully separated heatsink from the bad CPU, so I can re-use it if I need to. I appreciate the info.

heatsink

geez what a tedious journey to get here. listen if you're reading this you're probably frustrated as i have been just trying to remove a simple heatsink from a slot 1 cpu. Now I'm no computer guru or genius, but i've got boatloads fo common sense and mechanical apptitude.
My solution.......forget all this drill press non-sense & cd screws poppin rivets etc. just break the stinkin plastic mount holding the heat sink OK. And from the previous posts........OBVIOUSLY dont do ,anything on the CPU side. Just take a screwdriver on the heat sink side & snap the thing off!!
it can be re-attached using some tiny bolts (nuts on the heat sink side) or....get creative....i used 2-small wire ties. Worked like a charm. As i write you from my freshly upgaded ( from 1-600mhz to 2-733mhz matched CPU's) Precision 420 that is now running dual processors w/ one CPU heat sink fastened by WIRE-TIES!

hope that helps & hope you didnt spend as much time as I did to figure it out!

tootles,

LV
