PIII for PII Swap OK?

I have a dead PII computer. I want to swap in a PIII processor to see if the problem is processor related. Anyone know if I can get away with this without damaginbg the mobo OR the PIII? Thanks in advance!

Depends on Mobo but you should be able to set the fsb to 100 for the p3 if your board does not autodetect.

It really depends. Is the PIII a coppermine or an original Katmai Slot 1? The board will probably have to support a 100Mhz front side bus to make the processor work.

Shouldn't be a problem, but post your MB model so we can confirm.

Cant post mobo at the moment as I am at my day job but will do so this PM. The PC is an IBM Aptiva of some sort.

From what I have been told, this PC is DOA, no beeps, no BIOS messages. I'll have to check out some other items first but I wanted to know if this was possible at all so I could assess my troubleshooting options. I Think that the P3 is an original Katmai as it is about 2-3 years old.

If it's a 2-3 year old Katmai, you should be able to put any 66 or 100 MHz FSB slot one processor in that board and it'll be supported, at least far enough to see if the thing powers up

Good luck!

Oh, BTW, it wouldn't happen to be an Abit BE6-II motherboard would it? Found a common problem with those, whose symptoms are what you're describing, which is fixable by a good electronics tech without microsurgery.

Hold the phone here, ain't the P3's a bit lower in voltage than a P2 CPU ?

edit;
If you use a socket 370 P3 on a slocket it outta be OK, but you cannot use a slot P3 unless the mobo supports the lower voltage.

checked with ol Craniums "Processor Specifications Chart" ->>

Doc, well put, but most of the Slot 1 mobos I've run across have no problem delivering the correct voltage.

Well, I swapped in (systematically) RAM, AGP card, Power supplies (tried two different ones) and CPU. No luck. No beeps no video, just the sound of the hard drive spinning up and the fans on the power supply and the cpu.. My guess is that the issue is the mobo.

Cranium,
Sorry I didn't see your post before I swapped in the P3 but it turns out it was on a slotket so I presume everything was Ok.

Thanks to all for the advice!
