| My Newest Creation, a SuperFast 413mhz Smoker
Most of you who know me, remember I'm a bit slow to upgrade.
I do have several boxes running, all for sale BTW, and a 1.0ghz Athlon.
The newest creation is a Celery 366 o/c'd w/75mhz FSB to a stunning 413mhz
I've had a rig like this before and it was killer too. No reason why such a wimpy rig like this responds so well.
Like 25 second boot time, instant responding to ICON clicks, I dunno why.. No I didn't do any benchmarks, we know what they'll show, typical 400mhz results I'm sure.. Just this thing is sooo much faster than even a 800mhz Pentium 3 Dell w/Win98 and no programs in msconfig.
I like the cheap thing here too.
1. Biostar M6TWC mobo & 366 Celery $75 shipped
2. Quantum 10g 7200 "AS" HD bout,, err $75 or so
3. Old Compaq case $5.00
4. Diamond Supramax-2260 56k $0.00
5. Old floppy & CD scavenged from junk $0.00
6. Win98se upg $10.00
7. Used 128mb RAM $10.00
$175 total for a great running box
another bargain from "Docs Deals" |

Congrats Richard, I do this all the time too. It gives you a warm fuzzy feeling but systems like this are hard to sell. I suspect that if it wasn't for the various distributed computing projects, a lot more old clunkers would be in the land fill. Just be careful not to get too attached cause they do eat electricity.

damn doc, if you could ship internationaly, i'm sure elementary schools here could use those in there class rooms. not bad prices either.
i tuter elementary school students twice a week for free and i teach them how to use the computer and play games. the problem is i the workstaion are used during the work week. i'm up the creek if something goes wrong with them. the other problem is that my mouse balls keep disappearing.
but the shipping and customs costs will triple even if it's donated. |

Looks great. Must be tough to use without a monitor.

Hey Doc!
That sounds like one of my clunkers! But they do move don't they.
I call these the challengers cause when you get them working it sure is a feeling of accomplishment!
Congrats!

Yeah, it IS hard to sell a mid-range unit like this for what it's really worth, which is prolly $275 w/o monitor.
BTW, BHess, I forgot the monitor,, I got one from "Greedy Gridman"(Greediest Man Alive)for $5.00. It's a CTX 14" monitor in Perfect condition. Crisp screen, correct color, no burn marks.
So, lessee, that's $180.00, now I'm thinking about adding a $10 front USB port,, hmmmmm |

Doc, I just love machines like that. I call 'em "guerilla computers", probably a throwback to the days when a Celery 300A could be made to behave like a P-2 450 (the top of the line at the time) for about $350 less than that 450 was running at the time.
I still have that 300A, all the other parts and pieces have gone on to other machines, but I just can't bring myself to part with it. It was in my first audio workstation, happy as a clam and wicked fast at 463. I'm thinking about having it bronzed

Thats what I call my wonderous creations - and yes the cheaper the better - the more you have to modify to fit something - the better - jig saw and dremel tool delights -
Monitors - dirt cheap - but still working strong
cd roms for a dollar at a yard sale
dimms pulled from still running junk - only to be reborn again.
LOL
