| amd 2500+ processor problem
got a question for you guys!
i recently bought a new computer and i did set it up and at first it crashed directly in the windows installation (of XP) so i start messing around with the setting and i saw that the installation only worked if i downcloak the fsb to 133mhz instead of 166mhz (computer totally lock and i need to close computer from the power supply to be able to reopen it after)
i didnt pay too much attention at first after install i put back 166 mhz and it boot fine...
now after starting some 3d application i saw that the computer always do the same thing when i put it at 166 and ALWAYS at the same place when i run a 3d software and i was even able to make it crash at 133 mhz on fsb the same way....
so now im stuck with a 2.08 ghz that run at merely 1.3ghz...
i did try to change the ram for 266mhz one (i got 1 gig of 333 one)
i tried a different AGP card
updated the BIOS
updated all drivers (which shouldnt change anything since it was doing that in dos)
unplugged everything and so on
i got a MSI K7N2 (with the nforce 2 chipset) and a 2500xp+ barton processor
so now im wondering what i could try next to try fixing that?
thanks in advance |

The cpu probably wants more voltage (core voltage). What's it at now?
You must be careful raising it in slow increments, watching your tempertures all the while. As you raise the core voltage, the cpu core temperature will increase also. |

humm good idea, didnt try that
here the result :
when i use the AS DEFAULT h/w it run the longest
i tried from range 1.550v to 1.650 v (the latest being the normal setting for the barton processor according to the amd website)
the more i raise the vcore the fastest it crashed at 1.650v it crashed so fast i couldnt even go back to the bios to reset the default i had to use the jumper
the temperature is fine all along so im thinking do i have a bad processor?
edit : forgot to tell i was running at multiplier 12.5 all along
thanks |

Well, considering the 2500+ runs at 1.83 GHz, not 2.08, that may be your problem right there. It's supposed to be running on an 11x multi stock.

What's the rating of the power supply? And what brand? Problem is either heat related or power supply related. If you set everything to default and it still doesn't run, then check those two things first. I'm leaning more towards Power supply though, as you've already checked your temps. |

ok here i go again :
processor amd xp2800+
MB : MSI k7n2
ram : micron 2 X 512 meg of 333mhz ram (tried also with 2 X 256 meg of ram 266mhz do the same thing)
video card : asus geforce 4 ti4200 (did try also with a geforce 2 mx 440 do the same thing)
using all onboard component for sound card + network (had some card before but remove them to test with those on MB do the same thing)
did disconnect already both cd drive and did the same thing
got a maxtor 60 gig HD
my fan is a volcano 10
when i tried different vcore i was checking temp 1 min before trying to boot it was at between 35 to 45 celsius and like 10 sec after computer was closed
my psu is a 300W (i just remembered that i didnt change it with new computer i took my old one) think its the problem? and its an unbranded one

I don't want to hijack someone's thread BUT we're basically experienceing very similar problems. I, likewise, could not load Win XP at 166/166 FSB settings. More than once the install crashed, until I turned down the FSB and slowed the HD transfer rate down. I also, seem to have data transfer problems between IDE devices, especially the HD and CD-RW when loading programs; however, it seems only to happen when running at full bore ATA 133. I have also had the system crash with random re-boots. When it does I here a sound like 'ntick' (or is that just the system resetting itself) again only running at 166/166 FSB settings.
My latest beast:
ECS K7S7AG rev.1.5 All Sis and ECS drivers installed
Athlon XP 2600+ rev. 'B' 333FSB @ 2.08Mhz 166/166FSB
K-Byte DDR 2700, 512MB
above passed Memtest 86 @ 166/166 FSB settings
Maxtor ATA 133 40GB HD Windows drivers
MS Windows XP (early version) W/O SP 1.
Cheapo: 'Powmax' 400watt power supply
has 20 amps on 12 volt rail though
I'm beginning to suspect power supply and (or) Win XP as it's ACPI may not work well with this 'Chinese Wonder' But I imagine the system would run much hotter with it disabled. |
