How do laptop CPUs compare to their desktop counterparts?
I am thinking about buying a laptop. The main use would be for video editing on the road. I was wondering if a 2.4ghz laptop would encode video at the same rate as my 2ghz desktop? Desktop is a P4 2.0A Northwood 400MHZ FSB. The laptop I was looking at was a P4 2.4ghz with a 533MHZ FSB. I just noticed that they are called "mobile" processors and thought that might make a difference.
As usual, thanks in advance for any help.

it might. Since a labtop uses batteries, you won't find labtop hard drives that run faster than 5400 RPM. Most of them run at 4800 RPM. Todays desktops have 7200rpm or 10000rpm hard drives so data transfer, reading, and writing will be better than labtop hard drives. I think the hard drive will slow you down.
Is that what you wanted to know or not? the title of the post is different from the question in the post.

I never thought about the hardrive speed. Thanks for the comments. I guess I was more wondering about the sheer number crunching power of the standard P4 vs. the P4 Mobile.

though a little oudated, this might help a little.

also note the its DDR2100 so it won't be fast as 533RDRAM. Then you can compare the results to the other articles under the processors section.

mobile bad...I made sure to avoid mobile processors when I bought my notebook...I have a regular P4 2.4ghz 533mhz FSB in mine.

laptops are cool. for your on the road editing it your choice will be fine. mobile processors: don't really know. I figured a processor is a processor and it is mobile when you make it mobile.

The modern mobile CPUs just have stuff to lower their power consumption when not under load. I think they are also made with a smaller fab process to lower the heat produced. Other than that I don't THINK there is a difference.
Laptop hard drives on the other hand are slower. The displays don't always handle motion as well either._____
