overclocking n00b

HEy guys, just wanted some instructions on how to OC my new p4 2.4 processor. It has an 800 fsb, on an Abit IS7-E mobo and 512 MB Geil RAM. I'm new at this, so I just upped the FSB from 200 to 220 and it works pretty well; so I tried upping it to 240...not so well, lol.

I'm unfamiliar with the whole playing with the voltages stuff; what voltages should I increase and by how much? I've heard people using the 2.4 p4 easily oc to around 3 ghz....

Thanks!

Read my review here about the Book of Overclocking... and it can be found here

Have a good one and good luck!

Also, check out these sites for how-to's and specifics on overclocking.

What speed is the ram?
It could be that the ram is your weak spot, if that's the case up the RAM voltage a little bit. However, as it is a good brand of ram, you could probably get that sort of speed out of it.
That brings us to the CPU core voltage, this is more likely the one you need to increase. Try upping it in small amounts, like 0.05 of a volt. Don't take it any higher than 1.85v. In extreme circumstances, you probably could get it higher (like if you're using a compressor cooler) but in most cases, 1.85 is the absolute cut-off.
Also, if your mobo supports it, try raising the FSB to 212 or 215 and see if that gives you better results. Keep a check on the temp when upping the voltage, and stress it using a few benchmark programs at each setting, like 3dmark03, superpi etc. It would also help to keep a note of the scores you get in these programs as it is useful for deciding when to stop (ie the voltage/heat is too high, and you don't get much performance increase from that step up)

Hey Nukes,

I have Geil pc3200 RAM. I've upped the FSB to 220, and after running 3dMark2001 I get a bump of a few hundred points and a proc. temp of 50C. I guess I'll just keep playing around with it until it works; I've heard that lots of people get around 3 GHz with this 2.4 chip, so needless to say, I'm curious

Don't forget while overclocking you're not supposed to jump so high, from the looks you're going in 20 MHz increments, you should try 1 or 2 MHz increments so that it "burns-in" and then try a little harder.
