XP 1700+....overclocking problems.... - Tech Support Forums

Hello there. This overclocking ordeal is getting wack. I just built my computer about 1 and 1/2 weeks ago and i specifically bought a AMD XP 1700+ to overclock to at least 2.2 Ghz. My problem? Im not exactly sure, but everytime I run Prime95 and turn up my voltage just a tad bit it starts buggin out. When I overclocked my computer to 2.2 and turned it up to 1.825v my computer froze many times. So I had to eventually turn it all the way down to 2.0 GHz and 1.78v and it still gets these "Hardware failure" errors when I run Prime95. Whats going on? Why is this processor acting so stubborn? I got a Heatsink fan connected to my CPU running at 5600 RPM and the temp usually doesnt get any higher than 60 deg. Celsius. Im using an ABit motherboard...such and such. what the heck? help PLEASE!

whats the mobo ddr and other components...what are your settings multiplier and fsb....sounds like your trying to oc it way to much the 1700 is a great lil oc'er but from what I've seen the newer ones haven't been hitting 2.2 ghz they've been running 2.0g or around there.

we need basic system info before anyone can help

60 c is pretty warm . what is the motherboard ? what is the ram ? what setting are you trying to do ?

overclocking isn't a standard . each cpu will do what it wants . some will overclock alot some won't . overclocking isn't just changing the fsb . there are alot of other things that come into play .

well right now im running prime95 with 1.78v at 2.0 Ghz and the temperature is only 44.50. Its night time right now so im guessing that has something to do with it. My motherboard is the ABit NF7 Series, with 512 MB RAM and im trying to at least get my voltage up to 1.85 and 2.2 Ghz.

If that's a DLT3C chip, it probably just doesn't like high voltages. Or it just very well may be the heat.

Yeah, you can't assume that you would be able to OC to 2.2ghz, thats just what some people got with certain steppings

You will need some serious cooling for 1.85v, I wouldn't reccommend it as it will shorten the life of the chip.
60c is a bit hot, and you should always add a few degrees onto that unless you put the sensor in between the CPU and heatsink.
2000mhz is a good overclock for that chip anyway. Quit moaning, you've got it up to like 2600+/2700+ or something like that anyway.

well assuming that you have your standard 1.46GHz chip running at 2.0GHz, you must have a pretty high FSB. How hot is your north bridge? when those things get hot, you start crashing.

do you have your DDR voltage up? [2.5v is default]

yes, 60C is too hot, i make it a rule that mine is not to go over 55C, because it starts to crash badly on the road to 60C. Are you using a solid copper heatsink?

What are your multiplier/fsb settings? Have you tried to raise the multiplier above stock settings?

My 2400+ will barely make it to 2800+, and my friends 2600+ will hardly make it to 2700+, and we have the good steppings, etc.. and can hardly overclock, so its more a skill of luck than anything.

2.0GHz AthlonXP = 2400+
