Boxed Intel CPUs

Just now, I've managed to make myself a Windows 2000-Powered, Intel Pentium III 1.0GHz-powered, Hyunday 512MB 133MHz SDRAM Powered, working computer.

There is something fishy that I would like to discuss with the fans that Intel bundle with the Retail CPUs.

* The Clip Design: I was able to "mash" this Heatsink (and "glue it" onto the Mobo forever) using this VERY STUBBORN Clip. Once you insert your Intel PIII Heatsink on top of your Intel PIII, you can NOT remove your heatsink fan whatsoever. The Gigabyte Motherboard worked fine, but suffered some cracks due to the "stubborn" clip. I find the Intel Heatsink Fan's clips totally unforgiving, much more unforgiving than other Socket 370 HSFs that you can use for Coppermine and Tualatin CPUs.

* Thermal paste on the Heatsink Fan itself. EWWWW. Had to "axe" out of the surface and use the Antec-branded Silver Syringe (I installed it right this time around). Cleaned the contact surface with Acetone and Target-branded Alcohol before I even began mating the HSF on top of the 1.0GHz Pentium III Processor (Is 1.0 GHz considered Coppermine or Tualatin BTW?).

* You can't remove the HSF without running the risk of "twisting" the HSF and/or breaking the Socket "Hooks". I already broke one part of my Gigabyte Mobo's Socket 370, but the Heatsink Fan WAS STILL TIGHTENED. Even though it moved, the HSF still stayed there. Remember, Intel clips are really stubborn.

* WARNING: Once you mount the HSF on top of the Pentium III, please don't try to remove the HSF as you might risk breaking the Pentium III's die. However, my Pentium III Workstation worked fine The die was fine. I don't know whether or not Intel's die are harder to break than AMD's Dies.

I'd have to agree about the clip. The Intel Retail HSF uses a very stiff clip. The first couple of times I installed them I was sure that I was going to crush the die. You can even see the plastic of the CPU bending under the force. It's a good thing that the Intel dies are more robust than the AMD dies. Without the benefit of rubber supports like AMD's CPUs, the Intel dies are more susceptible to chipping. AMD CPUs, OTOH, are often destoryed after only minor chipping.

I've never had any problem removing the retail hsf. I just use a screwdriver and be very careful. I haven't had a screwdriver slip and damage the board yet.

Whether or not its a coppermine or tualatin depends on the thickness. I think the coppermines are .18 and the tualatins are .13 micrometers

I should be a Coppermine, but here is a link.

The die is as small as the AMD's Die.

As an added note, I would like to say that with an AMD Chip, you definitely should try to avoid using the Stock Fan because it's really unforgiving to install. With an Intel Socket 370 Chip, I think you should also use a Socket 370 HSF with an easier clip that won't even chip your socket area of your Mobo.

Just my 2 cents.
