Question
Question about Processors and Motherboards!!!!

Hello Everyone!

Okay, first thing is first: I'm total newbie and had a question about Processors and Motherboards. I didn't really know where to post, so I hope this is the right place!

Well, I'm looking to replace my curren CPU. It's an Athlon XP 2200 @ 1.8 GHz. I would like a 2.8 GHz or higher. I've been searching around and found Athlons to be reasonable and Pentiums to be expensive. My question is, how to I replace the CPU?? And why would I need a motherboard??? Please help me! Is a web site that explains all this!?

Any help would be extremely appreciated.

Signed,
A newbie going bonkers

Depends on your motherboard. Can you post back with more info (like motherboard manufacturer and model number). Depending on your motherboard, you may be able to upgrade without having to install a motherboard.

Some motherboards max out at an AthlonXP 2600 because of the Front Side Bus speed. The 2200 Front Side Bus is 266mhz. The 2800 front side bus is 333mhz.

Just got off the phone...

Okay, I called the help line and here is my motherboard and model number:
FIC
AM37
I believe the first is the manufacturer and the second is the model number.

I hope this helps!
Thanks

You have decent setup now. It's not the best but there's just too much overkill these days and too much stressed on speed. Hang on to what you have and wait for the next generation of Athlon64's to suss things out.

I was just researching the motherboard that I have, and I will need to upgrade. I really want to play Doom 3, so I will wait until that is released until I decide to upgrade.
Thanks!

You should be thinking about a new video card then.

I'm getting a ATI Radeon 9700 PRO soon. Or else a Geforce FX 5900 Ultra.

Pop either one of those cards in your present system and it will kick proverbial ass.

Well if u mobo supports the CPU just take the heatsink off and replace it simple as that, i hope im rite. But if it doesnt support it buy a mobo and CPU make sure the memory is good too tho.

How much do u wanna spend on the video card ?
