What's a good heatsink for overclocking an XP 2000+

I was thinking about overclocking my Athlon xp 2000 cpu and I was wondering what would be the best heatsink for doing this. I don't want to spend 200 dollars on water cooling when I could just buy a new cpu, so what do you all think. Oh yeah and I don't want the fan on the heatsink to sound like a lawnmower (I don't mind it to be loud, but not too loud, you know).

Right now I have a Volcano 9...it's loud but it cools very well...I'm switching to water cooling in 3-4 days though

People who reply to this are going to say go with the SLK-900 or SLK-800 along wiht a good 92mm fan..these are priced RIDICULOUSLY...but they cool well. Here's the problem with going this route...
    You'll spend nearly $50 on the HEATSINK...then $5 - $15 on a fan.

When you look at water cooling setups, you're put in the dark a little bit...you see Innovatek, Swiftech, and now Corsair kits that cost in excess of $200...The truth is you can build your own water cooling setup for just over $100.

Wow, thanks for the information. I see there is a lot of options open for overclocking. Would you happen to know of a place where I could get water cooling for approximately $100? Though I am not too sure how much options my A7N8X Deluxe board gives me...I have read some places that this board is, for the most part, easily overclockable. what do you think about a volcano 10 heatsink for 20 dollars?

Hmm....yes darth gary...you are right about that. I am thinking that I might go with that slk-800 heatsink along with a powerful fan. That should do the trick. Thanks for you guys inputes.

Get a Vantec aeroflow, it'll keep your cpu very cool and quiet as well.

Don't forget th Artic SilverIII paste!

By the way I love my SLK7, it just has an 80mm case fan and does a great job.

I'm looking at a new heatsink myself for my new system, something that can handle at least a 2400+ processor. That Aeroflow one looks interesting if it's the one I'm thinkin of with the squirrel cage fan on top of the heatsink.

I think the advantage of that would be the ability to duct outside air to it easier...

i had vantec aeroflow for an hour it was great, but unfortunatlley its to big and it touches the capicators on my mobo. Im selling it for $22 + shipping if your interested.

its absolutley new, still in the package, i used it for an hour but was forced to put my old fan back on. I have heatware but havnt sold anything before, shawshank62.

Shawshank62, thanks for the offer...but I am almost certain it will interfere with my capacitors in a A7N8X Deluxe motherboard. How well did it cool your system? That heatsink looks pretty interesting.

with the stock heatsink that came with my 2600 it runs at about 45-46 C and with that it was going at about 38-41 (my room temps were in the 80's somedays, but when it was cool i could get about 38 (not to mention the AS3 did not have time to fully set in))

I have a coolermaster that does an excellent job. It can de had here http://www.techimo.com/forum/t70754.html.

Honestly though, all you really need is the stock HSF that comes with the processor. I have been overclocking a ton of the AMD plus chips and the T'breds do NOT generate enough heat to warrant expensive aftermarket cooling. You are not going to get enough overclock out of this to need additional cooling. And when you reach the limit of your chip, it won't be because of heat (unless you keep your computer in your oven).

I had a 2000+ that I was able to overclock around 400mhz. Stock HSF, temps around 120F. under load. I now run a 1700+ that I am able to overclock 800Mhz. The temps are 10Deg.F. higher than stock speeds, my experience has been the same with all the current AMD CPU's.

Nope, different one than I was thinking of....hmmm. Although, I may be interested in that Aeroflow for myself......if it won't have issues with My board....seems them damn capacitors are always in the way.....I dunno. Are the capacitors on your board as close as the ones on an Abit KR7a? I'm upgrading to at least a 2100+ processor...prolly a 2400+, and if that can handle the heat, I'm in need of a good heatsink..

Although, like yourself, I have crap for references ( other than the CD's I sent to Shahani and Angel Cat gratis ). I've bought on Ebay 5 times and have a good rep there. Guess we'd just have to trust each other

Of course, if you didn't hold up your end of the bargain....I KNOW WHERE YOU HANG OUT AT ONLINE! I'LL HOUND YOU LIKE THE DOG YOU ARE!

I'll get back to you on the heatsink thing...Lemmee know what MOBO you had fitting issues with, and I can take a look see and find out whether I'd have similar issues or not.

I've got an SLK-800 with an 80mm fan and it works great. Got my 1700+ overclocked to 2.2Ghz and it's stable at 46C.

SVC's got the SLK-800 on sale for $37.99...quite a bit cheaper then the $50 that was posted earlier.

    SVC -- SLK-800

And yes...don't forget the ASIII...that does make a difference.
