Question
AMD OCverclocked yet unstable

Ive recently overclocked an AMD Athlon 1800 Series 8. All I have done is increase the fsb to 180, could somebody educate me about the other methods of OC (ie do I need to unlock the CPU and if so how etc)?

I have:
AMD XP 1800
Mercury KT400 Mobo
512 PC3200 DDR400 RAM
Geforce FX card

If you didn't adjust the multiplier then it is still at 11.5, so the clockspeed is 180x11.5 = 2070Mhz. It depends on the stepping but it should be stable at that speed if you give it some additional voltage.

Also make sure your PCI is locked or you have the right divisor.

Thanks Guys.

I can only alter the fsb in bios, do u know of any good software that would allow me to alter volyages and the likes whilst in windows or DOS?

Not off the top of my head. I honestly don't think I've heard of programs that allow you to adjust voltages in a windows/DOS environment, except maybe a handful that are board specific.

If the BIOS option isn't there, you may want to find out if there may be a BIOS update that will allow you to. If there isn't one, you're kinda outta luck. You're going to have to either bump down the multiplier (probably going to need to unlock chip to do that, though) or bump the FSB down until you get stability.

maybe you have set your FSB too high that your PCI and AGP bus speed have become over-specifications. make sure pci/agp frequencies are fixed or near to 33/66 respectively.
