Athlon XP 1700 and SSE - Tech Support Forums

I have just picked up Adobe Premiere Pro and might have wasted my money but anyways....
To use this software the pc must have the SSE instruction set which i thought the 1700 had but I downloaded a utility that showed me that it was not available.

Now I am wondering if there is a way to enable it or am I just out of luck here and will have to use another piece of software.

The error message i receive is that Adobe premier Pro can not run on this computer because the processor does not support the SSE instruction set.

a 1700+ has SSE instructions but not SSE2 instructions, those are found in P4's, Xeons, Intanium, and opteron cpu's.

you can use a program such as CPU-Z or WCPUID to identify the instructions sets currently operating in your CPU.

use google.com to search for those.

All of the Athlon XP CPUs have SSE. I've heard of programs that only check a registry key instead of actually seeing if your CPU has SSE.. Did you install your OS with another CPU, then upgrade?

When upgrading an existing system with a new Duron (Morgan) or Athlon XP (Palomino) processor, 2 changes need to be made.
1 - Upgrade the BIOS to fully support all the new capabilities of the new processor including SSE instructions

2 - Reload the Operating System to properly recognize that the processor is now capable of supporting SSE

This procedure applies to Win95/98, WinME, Win2000, WinNT, WinXP

Changing processor from AMD Athlon(T-Bird)/Duron to AMD Palomino/Morgan (or vice-versa).

When changing processors in a Socket A platform as described in the above bullet, it is advised to do a fresh install of the operating system. The reason is the "operating system setup" must detect at the time of operating system install whether the Socket A processor is a SSE capable Palomino/Morgan or a non SSE capable T-Bird/Duron. Only at "operating system install" can the operating system properly install libraries and registry additions for proper processor support. A reinstall over an old operating system install or updating from one operating system to another operating system, after a processor is changed as described above, will not guarantee the proper support for that newly installed processor.

Note: If the BIOS does not provide proper support for the processor(including SSE support for a Palomino/Morgan) at the time of operating system install, later upgrading the BIOS to one which does properly support all features of the processor, will require a fresh install of the operating system.

Utilities To Confirm SSE Support

Most 3rd party processor ID utilities only confirm whether the processor and BIOS are SSE capable thru a CPUID instruction check. This does not mean that the operating system has the proper registry additions and libraries installed to support the processor for optimum performance.

This issue applies mainly to the upgrade market. We do not believe this will effect the new system market because OEM's will be setting their BIOS
correctly from the factory build process to take advantage of these capabilities of the Duron - Morgan and Athlon - Palomino processors in addition to loading a new install of the operating system.

Okay thanks for taking me back, I had a 1.2 Athlon that burned out and had to get a different CPU (XP 1700) in its place in January of this year. So indeed i had the os installed and then got another CPU.
The utility that i was using was WCPUID and it did come in handy
as i tried to enable SSE through the TWEAK menu but all that did was crash my sytem each time i opened premier.

Awesome info there Jerry. I'll definately have to keep that in mind for future reference.

Basically, if I wanted to have an OS support an instruction if I upgraded CPU's, I'd need to re-install the operating system, and the motherboard's BIOS needs to be able to support the newer instruction sets, as well. Check. Got it. Committed to memory.

So did anyone act on this advice? I have an Athlon XP2400+ upgraded from an XP1600 and previously an Athlon 1200, and I have a K7S5A motherboard, so looks like I have Rocks' exact same problem: I can't run Premiere Pro (SSE error message) unless I enable SSE with WCPUID but then PP crashes (and I mean it cold boots the PC!) as soon as it finishes loading a Premier 6.5 project. I've upgraded my bios to the latest version available on ECS' web site just to make sure.

Do you need to reformat your OS partition, or can you simply reinstall XP on top of the existing install to enable SSE? Any other workaround that would be less painful?
