Vesther's Intel Pentium III Torture Test

Just now, I had to perform a Torture Test (on Idle) with an Intel Pentium III Processor. This is the equipment I've used for the Pentium Torture Test (No Overclocking, though):

* Intel Socket 370 Pentium III at 1.0GHz (Coppermine)
* Gigabyte GA6VTX with the Blue PGA370 Socket (for Tualatin Support)
* Intel's RATHER UNFORGIVING Stock Fan with the horrendous Stock Clip
* Antec Reference Silver (Only applied a thin layer of it)
* 512MB PC133 Hyundai SDRAM
* Quantum Fireball 20GB 7200 RPM Hard Disk Drive
* Floppy Disk Drive
* Delta ATAPI 12X DVD-ROM
* Generic Pentium III-ready case with side case fan
* Front and Rear Case Fans
* Two PCI System Fans, one of them a Vantec PCI Air Circulator

Here are my results:

* CPU Temperature (Maximum): 37 Degrees Celcius
* Motherboard Temperature (Maximum): 25 Degrees Celcius
* CPU HSF Fan Max RPM: 3750
* System Fan Maximum RPM: 2481

The results were obtained by "sneaking in" on the BIOS's Hardware Monitor. Remember that I had the computer running for 50-60 minutes on IDLE without any Disk Activity whatsoever.

Not a horrendous temperature, but you could certainly do better at idle. Undoubtably, its the stock cooler that is reflected in your idle temps.

I wouldn't be satisfied with it, but hey, thats me.......

Besides, we all kinda recognize that the idle temps aren't really the issue right? Your temps under load are gonna be more important in determining your system stability and reliability.

Shoot us the results of your temps under full load for the same amount of time. You might be able to live with it, then again, you might not.

Hi
That is too much for an idle ...
My last P!!! 1GHz used to work at 26C Idle 34C Full Load after hours of UT gaming ... the FSB was 137MHz

I used to use GlobalWin FOP38 HS with the screamer Delta fan .. but even with lower speed fans you should get around 28C Idle /37C Full Load, out of your 1GHz CPU...

Regards

I must be doing something seriously wrong here or something then....?

I've got a water-cooler setup on my Tbird 1.333 and it barely matches your temps!

CPU temp (running Prime95 torture test) is 38C and the mobo temp is 20C (yeah it's cold in here). That is a temp difference of 18C between case/mobo and cpu. Your temps however are only 12 or 13C different. What is going on?

Also note that this is just after a couple hours of refiling my WC system with distilled water/purple ice solution (It's probably less than 5% PI as I had trouble with foaming in the tubing and finally had to fill it with pure distilled water to get rid of the foam- and then tried to add as much PI as I could into the system. Its a really faint purple now.

Gigabyte Pentium III VIA Chipset Mobo

The Gigabyte Mobo that I'm using as part of the test only has a Heatsink and does not have a Chipset Fan whatsoever. However, I'm planning to install a Chipset Fan onto the Heatsink sometime in the future to keep my Mobo cooler, though.

Hey Vesther, if you have not already thought of it, you might consider this....

A lot of 486 CPU fans fit on the chipset heatsinks without modifications.....

If you don't have one lying around, they can be had pretty cheaply, and you can use your current chipset heatsink.

Most cost effective
